Men’s Soccer Shutout by Rival Purple Eagles 3-0

Written by: Andrew Nowel

On a warm evening in Lewiston, New York, the Canisius Golden Griffins men’s soccer team took the field on their rival’s field. The Niagara Purple Eagles were fighting for the last spot in the MAAC playoffs and they needed a win to be confident going into their final game. The Golden Griffins very badly wanted to ruin the Purple Eagles’ season, but the Purple Eagles wore down the Golden Griffins’ defense and outscored a team that led the MAAC in goals going into Wednesday’s game 3-0.

The Purple Eagles were all over the Golden Griffins in the 1st half as the shot attempts were 12-1 in favor of the Purple Eagles at halftime. However, only 1 went on goal in the 13 total shot attempts which was stopped by Golden Griffins Graduate Student goalkeeper Spencer Catalano. The Purple Eagles did have 7 corners in the 1st half, but again, Catalano and the defense held strong, not allowing any high scoring chances.

The Purple Eagles came out similarly in the 2nd half to the 1st half, but this time they found the back of the net, only 3 minutes into the half. With a 1-0 lead, the Purple Eagles played more defensively, and the Golden Griffins took the opportunity to create some scoring chances. They would put on 8 shot attempts with 2 going on goal, but neither went in. The Purple Eagles added 2 more goals and won the game 3-0. It seems like the Golden Griffins’ season has been full of being so close to success as pieces really began to come together through multiple games, but as Head Coach Michael Tanke commented in an interview yesterday, the Golden Griffins just need to fix up a couple of things to be a great team.

“The results have been disappointing in terms of wins and losses as far as the season has played out,” said Coach Tanke. “With that being said, as of Wednesday, we led the MAAC in goals scored which is an incredible stat. The hardest thing in soccer is to score, and we’re doing that. As bad as the results look on the outside, I think, on the inside, we know we’re a lot closer than we were last year.”

The Golden Griffins have 1 more game. Today at 1 PM, they will host the Saint Peter’s Peacocks, and it is Senior Day. Each Senior has their own leadership skill on the team as Coach Tanke commented.

“Wags has had so much growth since I got here, and it’s been a great transformation from his part,” said Coach Tanke. “Inder is a quiet leader, but on the field, he’s a leader. He defends with heart and all the little things that we in the program and on the team notice that he does. Luke has had a tough time since I’ve started because he’s been injured more than he’s been healthy, but he’s done really well with it. When Spencer came in, he was a true #3, but he’s worked his way up, and right when he was in line for the #1, Will Howard who had transferred from Louisville kind of took over that spot. It hasn’t been easy for Spencer; his path.”

Next season will be about seeing the entire thing come together as year 3 begins for Coach Tanke, and the team is looking very promising as the offseason begins after today’s game.

Stats for the Niagara game

The Purple Eagles recorded 23 shots (8 on goal) while the Golden Griffins recorded 9 shots (2 on goal).

Catalano recorded 5 saves while the Purple Eagles Sophomore goalkeeper recorded 2 saves.

The Purple Eagles had 14 corners while the Golden Griffins had 2 corners.

The Purple Eagles got called for 19 fouls while the Golden Griffins got called for 8 fouls.

Swim and Dive Take Down Yellowjackets, Women Fall to Saints

Written by: Andrew Nowel

The Canisius Golden Griffins swim and dive team jumped back into the pools last Saturday as they swam in a tri-meet against the Rochester Yellowjackets and the Siena Saints. Both the men and the women defeated the Yellowjackets while the women fell to the Saints. Pool records were broken, and it was an all-around excellent meet for the Golden Griffins.

The men only raced against the Yellowjackets since the Saints didn’t have a men’s team. Leading the way for the men was Freshman Marin de Villard who placed 1st in all 3 of his individual races. de Villard also broke a pool record in the 200 Back by finishing with a time of 1:52.50. He won the 200 Free and 500 Free with times of 1:43.13 and 4:55.16 respectively. After the meet, de Villard was really happy with the way he raced and the way the men’s team raced overall.

“I feel like we raced really well,” said de Villard on Monday. “We had worked on our little technical mistakes from our previous meet against Marist, but we have a great team, and we are building it up. We push each other really hard everyday at practice because we want to get better and improve at each meet.”

de Villard was also really proud of the record that he broke, but he gave the credit for that broken record to his coaches for helping him work really hard to accomplish such a feat.

“Working with Scott and Greg helped me to use the best of my abilities to continue to break those records,” said de Villard. “I really want to point out that it’s an amazing and unique team, and if we continue to work in that team spirit, we will go far.”

The Golden Griffins men’s team defeated the Yellowjackets 167-120 while the women defeated the Yellowjackets 173-120. The women also fell to the Saints 177-111, but it was still a great race for the women. Led by Sophomore Many Hill who placed 2nd in the 50 Free with a time of 25.34, the Golden Griffins had multiple great races. Junior Brenna McLaughlin placed 1st in both the 200 Back and 200 IM with times of 2:09.43 and 2:13.10 respectively. Freshman Evie Leighton placed 1st in the 200 Free with a time of 1:56.47, but had the greatest impact with her 3rd place finish in the 50 Free with a time of 25.41 and 4.9% impact. Overall, it was a meet to be happy with for the women even though they lost to the Saints.

“I’d say we have been performing pretty well,” said Hill yesterday. “I see a lot of potential on our team this year. It’s been great to see the hard work the entire team is putting in. Last weekend, we had a lot of top finishes throughout the whole meet, so I’m hoping that will carry over into this weekend.”

The Golden Griffins will host the SUNY Geneseo Knights today at 12 PM in their 1st home meet of the season.

Rowing Has Successful Yinzer Cup with Novice Shell Leading the Way

Written by: Andrew Nowel

It was a rainy day in Western Pennsylvania last Saturday as the Canisius Golden Griffins rowing team headed out for another day of fall competition. They were just outside of Pittsburgh in Moon Township where the Yinzer Cup was being held. Behind the novice shell’s 1st place finish, the Golden Griffins had another excellent regatta as they continue to prepare for their spring season.

The Varsity 8 started the day at around 11:40 AM with the Canisius A and Canisius B both having a good regatta. Junior coxswain Macey Schneider led the Canius A team, or Varsity 8, to a 2nd place finish with a time of 15:30.7. The Duquesne Dukes finished in 1st place and would dominate the day with multiple top 5 finishes. The Canisius B team, or 2nd Varsity 8, would finish in 7th with a time of 18:29.9. Freshman coxswain Grace Metnick worked with her crew to coordinate through the rainy conditions.

At 12:08 PM, the Novice 8 began with the Canisius Novice 4 A starting at 12:36 PM. Led by Sophomore coxswain Gianna Perugini, the Golden Griffins finished 1st with a time of 8:48.2, beating the Dukes by just over 20 seconds. Alongside her crew of Junior Ava Morgan, Sophomore Mackenzie Harmon, and Freshman Shayna Klose and Briana Wasil, Perugini gave the Golden Griffins something to cheer about on a desolate day.

“Honestly, I got out of that boat feeling just extremely proud of the 4 other girls in that boat,” said Perugini on Monday. “We put all the pieces together and just went for it. It has been amazing watching those girls and myself grow throughout the season. Going from to where we were at the beginning of the season to where we are now is absolutely insane, so it was great to see things start to fall into place.”

The final regatta of the day began at 1:41 PM with the Canisius A team in the Varsity 4 leading the way. They were the 3rd shell out in this regatta and finished 2nd behind the Dukes once again with a time of 15:28.1. The Dukes had only won by just over a second. Junior coxswain Morgan Marsallo led this crew to the finish while the Canisius B team finished 4th behind the Dukes B team. The Golden Griffins B finished with a time of 16:06.4 led by Schneider as the coxswain. The Canisius C team would finish 8th with a time of 17:13.4 to wrap the day and the Yinzer Cup.

It was a great regatta for the Golden Griffins, and it was a great way to face competition as they continue to prepare for the spring season. Perugini and the team are excited for what is to come this upcoming spring, but they know they need to keep working if it's going to be a fun spring.

“The win was great and obviously a high, but now we just need to keep putting in the work to hopefully see success again next weekend,” said Perugini.

The Golden Griffins return to the water tomorrow in Philadelphia at the Head of the Schuylkill with the regatta starting at 9:55 AM.

Women’s Soccer Takes Down Purple Eagles in Battle of Bridge Rivalry Matchup

Written by: Andrew Nowel

On a warm October night in Buffalo, New York, Canisius University was the host of a long-time rivalry matchup between the Canisius Golden Griffins women’s soccer team and the Niagara Purple Eagles. After 90 minutes of dominant soccer from the Golden Griffins, they defeated the Purple Eagles 2-1 where many players shined as the Golden Griffins claimed the #3 seed in the MAAC playoffs.

The Golden Griffins had a great 1st half with 12 shot attempts to the Purple Eagles’ 2. A corner kick would set up the Golden Griffins’ 1st goal of the game which was scored by none other than Sophomore midfielder Skylar Cornell for her 6th of the season. The assists were awarded to Sophomore forward Mia Iacona, her 1st point of the season, and Freshman midfielder Jessica Whitaker. Cornell’s goal wouldn’t hold for long as the only shot on goal in the 1st half by the Purple Eagles would find the back of the net at the 25th minute, tying the game at 1.

The Golden Griffins kept the offensive pressure up, and it would pay off as at the 39th minute, the Golden Griffins found the back of the net with an incredible shot from Junior midfielder Emma Oliphant. This was Oliphant’s 4th of the season, and the team was fueled by this as they had more high scoring chances before halftime.

“At halftime, we really just spoke about keeping the energy high and going into the 2nd half just as strong as we went into the 1st,” said Oliphant after the game. “It was important for us not to concede, so we really just talked about being switched on and staying organized defensively.”

The Purple Eagles came alive in the 2nd half because their playoff hopes rested on their own shoulders. All they had to do was tie or win to clinch a playoff spot, but it would be up to the Manhattan Jaspers if the Purple Eagles lost. This fueled the offensive surge for the Purple Eagles in the 2nd half. However, Senior goalkeeper Jessica Jones and her defense held strong to keep the Purple Eagles out of the net.

As the clock hit zero, the Golden Griffins celebrated their 2-1 victory over the rivals. It was a big win for the Golden Griffins as they would secure the #3 seed in the MAAC playoffs. Even though the Fairfield Stags would win their game to force the Golden Griffins to play in the 1st round of the tournament, it was a great win and great accomplishment for the team.

“The win is huge for us!” said Oliphant. “We secured a home playoff game which is something that hasn’t been done in the program for a while. It feels great to finally get a win against Niagara. They’re our rivals, so it was a must win game in order to move forward into the playoffs on the right foot.”

The Golden Griffins will host the 1st round of the MAAC playoffs on Sunday at 12 PM against the Rider Broncs.

Stats for the game

The Golden Griffins recorded 25 shots (13 on goal) while the Purple Eagles recorded 9 shots (4 on goal).

Jones recorded 3 saves while the Purple Eagles Sophomore goalkeeper recorded 11 saves.

The Golden Griffins had 4 corners while the Purple Eagles had 2 corners.

The Golden Griffins got called for 11 fouls while the Purple Eagles also got called for 8 fouls.

Men’s Soccer Falls to Red Foxes 3-1

Written by: Andrew Nowel

The Canisius Golden Griffins men’s soccer team returned to the field to face off against the Marist Red Foxes, hoping to play spoiler against a playoff contender in the Red Foxes. Though the Golden Griffins came out strong and scored the 1st goal of the game, the Red Foxes worked their way to a 3-1 lead and didn’t look back, winning the game 3-1 to hand the Golden Griffins yet another loss.

The Golden Griffins had a couple of really good scoring chances in the 1st half, but only 1 of them found the back of the net. On 5 shot attempts, the Golden Griffins had 2 shots on goal with the goal being the only one to count. At the 24th minute, Junior forward Dylan Rice scored his 3rd goal of the season with Sophomore midfielder Kyle Pollard getting awarded the assist.

It was a great start for the Golden Griffins who were usually always trying to take a lead, but it wouldn’t last long. At the 29th minute, the Red Foxes tied the game at 1 off of a corner kick that found the back of the net, beating Graduate Student goalkeeper Spencer Catalano. Not even 5 minutes later, the Red Foxes scored again off of a corner kick to take a 2-1 lead. That lead would hold until halftime where Golden Griffins Head Coach Michael Tanke commented that he was pleased with how they were playing regardless of the score due to both goals going in because of corner kicks.

The 2nd half was even slower for the Golden Griffins as, unlike the Rider game, they didn’t find the energy to be able to overcome the 1-goal deficit. The final touch of the victory was added at the 86th minute when the Red Foxes scored 1 more goal to take a 3-1 lead. The Golden Griffins were frustrated with the game, and they knew that they needed to bounce back right away as their next opponent is a huge rival to them, the Niagara Purple Eagles.

“We’re still very focused on trying to be better than we were last year,” said Junior midfielder Kodie Sarkodie on Sunday. “We have the opportunity to triple our goals scored from last season, we can get more wins, and we can always get better at the way we’re trying to play. Beating Niagara is another motivator for us as they’re our rivals.”

The Golden Griffins will travel 30 minutes north to the campus of Niagara University to face the Purple Eagles today at 7 PM.

Stats for the game

The Red Foxes recorded 15 shots (10 on goal) while the Golden Griffins recorded 7 shots (3 on goal).

Catalano recorded 7 saves while the Red Foxes Graduate Student goalkeeper recorded 2 saves.

The Red Foxes had 14 corners while the Golden Griffins had 7 corners.

The Red Foxes got called for 9 fouls while the Golden Griffins got called for 6 fouls.

Women’s Soccer Clinches Home Playoff Game Behind Cornell’s 2 Goals

Written by: Andrew Nowel

On an exciting Saturday afternoon, the Canisius Golden Griffins women’s soccer team would take the field with hopes of clinching a home playoff game the following weekend. After a scoreless half, the Golden Griffins were trying to take the lead early in the 2nd half. Behind Sophomore midfielder Skylar Cornell’s 2 goals, the Golden Griffins defeated the Marist Red Foxes on the road 2-0 to clinch a home playoff game.

The Golden Griffins attempted 5 shots in the 1st half with 3 going on goal. None of the 4 attempted shots for the Red Foxes went on goal in the 1st half as the Golden Griffins defense was lights out. Led by Senior defender Sophie Chelini and Sophomore defender Meghan Heath, the Golden Griffins defense didn’t give up any chances for the Red Foxes to get the ball past Senior goalkeeper Jessica Jones.

The 2nd half was controlled by the Golden Griffins as they came out and scored 3 minutes into the half. Cornell scored her 4th goal of the season to give the Golden Griffins a 1-0 lead in a big matchup for them. The Golden Griffins would have 9 attempted shots in the 2nd half with 6 going on goal. Only 1 shot on goal was put on by the Red Foxes against Jones which credits the defense for an amazing performance to help Jones shut down the Red Foxes. Cornell would score again with 5 minutes to play in the 2nd half to finish the game with a 2-0 victory for the Golden Griffins. This was her 5th goal of the season with the assist being awarded to Junior midfielder Emma Oliphant. This win was huge for the team and program because it awarded the Golden Griffins a home playoff game for the 1st time in a couple of seasons.

“We’re all very excited,” said Cornell on Monday. “It’s been a while since we’ve been ranked as high as we are and performing as well as we are. Last year, we finished in 5th, but 3rd is a step up from that, and it’s just showing all our hard work and how it’s all come together.”

Cornell and the Golden Griffins knew that they need to keep scoring and creating offensive chances because they would be rematching teams that they lost to if they wanted to make their way through to the MAAC Championship game.

“We always knew that we were a defensive team, but being able to put the ball in the back of the net is so big in games like 1-0 or 2-0 because it helps us maintain the lead by playing our game of defense,” said Cornell.

The Golden Griffins will finish their regular season schedule tomorrow at 6 PM against the Niagara Purple Eagles at home.

Stats for the game

The Golden Griffins recorded 14 shots (9 on goal) while the Red Foxes recorded 9 shots (1 on goal).

Jones recorded 1 save while the Red Foxes Senior goalkeeper recorded 7 saves.

The Golden Griffins had 8 corners while the Red Foxes had 7 corners.

The Golden Griffins got called for 7 fouls while the Red Foxes also got called for 11 fouls.

Volleyball Falls in Dig Pink Game, Crowd Atmosphere ‘Was Awesome’

Written by: Andrew Nowel

The Canisius Golden Griffins volleyball team came to the court today with a lot of supporters in the stands. The Blue and Gold Brigade, or the Canisius Pep Band, and C-Block both came out to support the Golden Griffins. Even though the match wasn’t what the Golden Griffins wanted from today, they had a great turnout for their annual Dig Pink game. Their opponent, the Quinnipiac Bobcats, took the match by a final score of 3-0.

The Bobcats came out strong early on, but the Golden Griffins, behind their crowd support, didn’t give up. The Bobcats held a 11-2 lead early in the 1st set, but behind multiple errors from the Bobcats and a kill from Junior outsider hitter Kara Zaucha, the Golden Griffins worked their way back to 13-9. However, the Golden Griffins couldn’t quite make up the deficit and fell in the 1st set, 25-19.

They had more energy at the beginning of the 2nd set as the Golden Griffins took a 8-3 lead as Sophomore setter Ella Bourque jumped on the attack, earning 2 kills to help her team extend their lead. The Bobcats countered with a huge turnaround of points as they scored 10 of the next 11 points to take a 13-9 lead. The Golden Griffins countered themselves as they took a 17-15 lead behind a Zaucha kill and multiple errors from the Bobcats. They tried to hold the lead, but the Bobcats would end up with a 23-21 lead and never looked back, taking the 2nd set 25-22.

Now with a 2-0 lead in the match, the Bobcats controlled the atmosphere of the match. The Golden Griffins kept fighting all the way to the end, but the Bobcats won the 3rd set 25-17, winning the match 3-0. After the match, Zaucha was excited about how they had an excellent crowd atmosphere, but also how the Golden Griffins battled all throughout the match.

“We just have to get back in the win column next weekend with big matchups against Marist and Siena,” said Zaucha. “We battled this weekend, but couldn’t get the results we wanted. The crowd was amazing to have supported us today, and we really appreciate all the support from everyone. Going forward, the Rider match is a big focus as they are the biggest competition we have for the 6th seed, but to get that 5-set win against them was huge, and we just want to win it earlier in the match when they come here. It’s gonna come down to us working really hard because really all of these matches are important as we head down the final stretch toward the MAAC playoffs.”

The Golden Griffins will head to Siena University to rematch the Saints on Saturday at 2 PM.

Stats for the match

Golden Griffins- 43 points, 35 kills, 1 ace, 7 blocks, 31 assists, and 51 digs.

Saints- 58 points, 46 kills, 3 aces, 9 blocks, 44 assists, and 60 digs.

Volleyball Struggles, Stags Comeback for 3-1 Victory

Written by: Andrew Nowel

The Canisius Golden Griffins volleyball team was back on the court yesterday against the Fairfield Stags in a big MAAC matchup as the Golden Griffins entered as the 6th seed in the MAAC playoffs which was the final seed to get into the playoffs. Still with a couple of weeks left in the season, the Golden Griffins didn’t have to win the match, but it would be big for momentum as they continued on through the season. At first, the Golden Griffins seemed that they might take down the mighty Stags, but the Golden Griffins couldn’t finish out the 2nd or the 3rd set for a win in either set, giving the Stags a 3-1 victory in the end.

The Golden Griffins came out in the 1st set with a lot of energy. It helped that multiple players that had been injured were returning, and their bench was getting bigger, so the starters didn’t have to be exhausted by the 3rd set. The Golden Griffins jumped out to a 13-7 lead and never let up the lead as they won the 1st set 25-20. Graduate Student outside hitter Ella Loussia was again a big part of this dominance as she had 5 kills that all added to the momentum.

The Golden Griffins jumped into another lead in the 2nd set, and it seemed like they would take the set without a problem. However, after going up 9-3 early on and having a 22-15 lead late in the set, the Stags worked their way all the way back to a 24-24 tie. The Stags also got the next 2 points to win the 2nd set, tying the match at 1. This really hurt the momentum of the Golden Griffins, but it didn’t seem to show in the 3rd set early on. They jumped out to a 9-5 lead to begin the 3rd set.

The Stags said enough was enough and began to tire out the Golden Griffins. They tied the set at 12-12, but even then the Golden Griffins kept pushing forward, taking a 19-15 lead. The Golden Griffins had a 23-20 lead, but still couldn’t find a way to win. The Stags tied it again at 24, and the set went back-and-forth until they won the 3rd set by a final score of 28-26.

With a 2-1 lead in the match, and the energy completely depleted from the Golden Griffins, they were dominated in the 4th set as the Stags had everything going for them. The Stags won the 4th set 25-13, winning the match 3-1. The Golden Griffins didn’t have everything go badly in yesterday’s match as Loussia, Junior outside hitter Kara Zaucha, and Freshman outside hitter Lauren Hubert all combined for 41 kills with the Golden Griffins, as a team, earning 55 kills.

The Golden Griffins return to the court today at 12 PM where they will host the Quinnipiac Bobcats in their annual Dig Pink game and a huge MAAC matchup.

Stats for the match

Golden Griffins- 68 points, 55 kills, 7 aces, 6 blocks, 51 assists, and 64 digs.

Stags- 75 points, 58 kills, 9 aces, 8 blocks, 56 assists, and 75 digs.

Rowing Begins Fall Season with Excellent Performance at Head of the Niagara

Written by: Andrew Nowel

On a cool Sunday morning, the Canisius Golden Griffins rowing team kicked off their 2023 fall season. On October 15th, the Golden Griffins raced at the Head of the Niagara at the West Side Rowing Club in Buffalo, New York. They put in a lot of hard work to compete and would finish with multiple 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishes. It was an excellent start to the new season.

The regattas for the Golden Griffins began at 8:54 A.M. with the Women’s Collegiate 8+ where the Golden Griffins A team placed 2nd with a time of 10:54.52 behind the Mercyhurst Lakers and in front of the Golden Griffins B team who finished 3rd with a time of 11:29.48. The Canisius A team called the Varsity 8 was led by Junior coxswain Macey Schneider. The crew of rowers made up of Graduate Student Jaime Bennett, Seniors Olivia Morelle and Destiny Severn, Juniors Hannah Kenefick, Cecilia Reiser, and Skylar Vles, and Sophomores Adoree Naylor and Alice Schmidt all worked together to finish with a great time for their 1st regatta of the season.

The Canisius B team, or the 2nd Varsity 8, was led by Freshman coxswain Grace Metnick. The crew in this boat was made up of Sophomore and Freshman rowers who also all had a great regatta together. Sophomores Katie Bapst, Francesca DiCamillo, and Sophie Hartzell, and Freshman Kaitlyn Boxley, Alaina Levy, Gwen Orluk, Peyton Switek, and Gianna Weaver were the rowers in this boat. Metnick has a lot of responsibility as the coxswain, and she has to work together with the entire crew to be able to get the best time possible.

“I have been a coxswain for over 4 years now, and I really love the responsibility,” said Metnick after the regatta. “I have to be the coach in the boat when on the water during a race which is very rewarding. Our team has a family mentality, and we all really encourage each other to keep getting stronger every race.”

At 9:42 A.M., the Golden Griffins were back out on the water as the Women’s Collegiate Novice 4+ got underway with the Canisius A team, or Novice 4 A, placing 1st with a time of 12:50.18. The Canisius B, or Novice 4 B, placed 2nd with a time of 13:22.59, and the Canisius C, or Novice 4 C, finished the regatta at 3rd with a time of 13:58.09. Even though the Golden Griffins weren’t racing against other schools, they still worked together to put up excellent times. Metnick led the Novice 4 A as their coxswain while Weaver led the Novice 4 C as their coxswain.

The Golden Griffins took a break for a couple of hours as their final regatta of the day wasn’t until 12:14 P.M. The Women’s Collegiate 4+ was again only the 3 Golden Griffin boats, but the Golden Griffins still wanted to do their best as it would be their final regatta of the opening fall regatta. Led by Junior coxswain Morgan Marsallo, the Canisius A team, or Varsity 4 A, placed 1st with a time of 12:16.26. Schneider led the Canisius B, or Varsity 4 B, to 2nd place with a time of 13:00.55 while the crew of the Canisius C, or Varsity 4 C, worked together to finish 3rd with a time of 13:08.34. Overall, it was an excellent regatta for the Golden Griffins to kick off their 2023-2024 rowing season.

“Our home race was a very good way to start my Freshman season as well as the team’s season,” said Metnick. “I think this spring we are all going to come out of winter training better and faster than ever, and I’m super excited to see how our hard work will pay off in later seasons.”

The Golden Griffins traveled to Moon Township, Pennsylvania today and competed for the Yinzer Cup. A story will be out in the coming days about that regatta.

Women’s Soccer Falls 1-0 to Broncs as Push for Playoffs Continue

Written by: Andrew Nowel

The Canisius Golden Griffins women’s soccer team headed down to New Jersey to Rider University to face the Broncs as both teams were trying to find their spot in the MAAC playoffs. Even though the Golden Griffins dominated the game in possession and scoring chances, the Broncs worked to find the back of the net which the Golden Griffins couldn’t counter, ending the game with 1-0 victory for the Broncs.

The Golden Griffins outshot the Broncs 8-4 in the 1st half with the shots on goal being 3-2 in favor of the Golden Griffins. The Broncs defense and Senior goalkeeper were solid as nothing got by them. On the other end, when the Broncs did get chances, the Golden Griffins defense and Junior goalkeeper Jordan Spencer were also very solid. The Golden Griffins had 4 corners, but couldn’t find any way to get them in. After 45 minutes of scoreless soccer, the teams headed into halftime at a 0-0 tie.

Golden Griffins Head Coach Ryan Louis knew that his team needed to keep playing the way they were because they were creating chances, but they also needed to make sure that they didn’t give up anything on the defensive side. The 2nd half was completely dominated by the Golden Griffins, but one of the only chances the Broncs had, at the 67th minute, went into the net, giving them a 1-0 lead. The Golden Griffins tried to tie the game, but none of their 14 shot attempts would go into the net as the Broncs goalkeeper stopped all 5 shots on goal in the 2nd half.

It was a tough game to swallow for the Golden Griffins as the 1-0 loss was a setback in the push for the playoffs for them. Sophomore forward Mia Iacona knows that this loss is tough, but the team needs to move forward with the playoffs right around the corner.

“It's tough to lose to a team that we know we can definitely beat,” said Iacona after the game. “Especially after beating them twice last year, once in the regular season and [once] in the quarterfinals. I think this loss is going to just make us even more hungry to get a win on Saturday because we know we should’ve won our last game. Coming down to the end of the season every game matters, and it is important we end the season strong and reduce the amount of errors we’re making so we feel 100% going into the postseason. A big positive from our loss on Wednesday would be the continued determination to win and keep our place in standings, so we can get a home playoff game which hasn't happened in a while. Plus, knowing that we're playing one of our biggest rivals for our last regular season game definitely pumps us up to bring it all.”

The Golden Griffins will stay out on the road and head to Marist University to face the Red Foxes tomorrow at 1 PM.

Stats for the game

The Golden Griffins recorded 22 shots (8 on goal) while the Broncs recorded 6 shots (3 on goal).

Ice Hockey Falls 6-3 to Ranked Spartans

Written by: Andrew Nowel

The Canisius Golden Griffins ice hockey team took the ice last night against the #8 team in the country in ice hockey. The Michigan State Spartans are the 8th best ice hockey team in DI college hockey. It would be a challenge that the Golden Griffins, at 1st, weren’t up for, but they fought and never gave up. However, the Spartans did hold to win 6-3 in the high-scoring battle.

The Spartans were given their 1st chance to score when Graduate Student defenseman David Melaragni took a slashing penalty to give the Spartans a power play. The Spartans capitalized on this power play to take a 1-0 lead. They would extend the lead to 2-0 later in the 1st period. The Spartans continued this offensive success in the 2nd period as just over a minute into the 2nd, the Spartans extended the lead again to 3-0. 4 minutes later, it was 4-0 Spartans, and the game was spiraling out of control for the Golden Griffins.

However, the leader that he is, and the captain that he is; Senior forward Max Kouznetsov said enough is enough and took charge with the help of Senior forward Randy Hernandez and Sophomore forward Grant Porter to put the Golden Griffins on the scoreboard. It was Kouznetsov’s 1st goal of the season with it being Hernandez’s 2nd assist of the season and Porter’s 1st.

Even though the Spartans scored right back to extend their lead to 5-1, the Golden Griffins had some energy and were starting to come alive. They came into the 3rd period with a lot of momentum to score 2 unanswered goals to bring the Spartans lead down to 5-3. Hernandez scored both of the goals as he was beginning to show that the offensive production that the team had usually had him involved which was a huge thing for the Golden Griffins. His 1st goal of the night was unassisted while his 2nd goal was assisted by Senior defenseman Jackson Decker, his 3rd assist of the season, and Sophomore forward Oliver Tarr, his 1st assist of the season. Though the Golden Griffins came close to bringing the game back within reach, the Spartans would pull away with the victory by a final score of 6-3, adding an empty net goal late in the 3rd.

The Golden Griffins returned to the ice tonight in a rematch against the Spartans. The game has concluded, and a story about that game will be out in the following days.

Stats for the game

Golden Griffins- 45 shots, -16 rating, 45% faceoffs, 9 penalty minutes, and 13 blocks.

Senior goalie David Fessenden had 14 saves with 4 goals against and got pulled in the 2nd period. Freshman goalie Ethan Robertson had 16 saves with 1 goal against.

Spartans- 36 shots, +15 rating, 65% faceoffs, 14 penalty minutes, and 10 blocks.

The Spartans Freshman goalie had 42 saves with 3 goals against.

Men’s Soccer Tie Comes with a Price, Eliminated from Playoffs

Written by: Andrew Nowel

A day that was beautiful turned into a disappointing night as the Canisius Golden Griffins men’s soccer team hosted the Rider Broncs yesterday afternoon. It seemed like the Broncs would win the game without a problem, but after Sophomore midfielder Glodie Mata scored a goal in the 2nd half for the Golden Griffins, they came alive to tie the Broncs 2-2. However, the problem was that either a tie or a loss eliminated the Golden Griffins from the playoffs, so heartbreak was the final feeling that the Golden Griffins felt as they left the field.

The 1st half was all Broncs as the passing was precise for them, and everything seemed to go their way. 10 minutes into the game, the Broncs took a 1-0 lead, and they extended that lead to 2-0 at the 44th minute, just before halftime. The shot attempts were 16-7 in favor of the Broncs in the 1st half with the Broncs also leading the shots on goal 6-3. The Broncs had control of the ball for the majority of the half as well.

Golden Griffins Head Coach Michael Tanke wasn’t happy with his team at halftime because he knew that they could play better. However, this message didn’t seem to resonate with the Golden Griffins as the 2nd half started like the 1st half with the Broncs dominating the possession. At the 67th minute, everything changed as Mata found the back of the net to shorten the Broncs’ lead down to 2-1. This was Mata’s 4th goal of the season with the assist being awarded to Freshman forward Mason Petrucci.

This was the catalyst to jumpstart the Golden Griffins offense as 12 minutes later, they found the back of the net with Junior forward Ely Sidibe, scoring his 3rd goal of the season in his 1st game back at home since the end of September. Freshman midfielder Edison Flores was awarded the assist, and the goal was really rewarding for Sidibe and the team as it showed how hard they worked to tie the game after a really tough first 60 minutes of the game.

“Glodie’s contribution changed the game for us,” said Sidibe after the game. “He made a massive impact which helped shift the momentum to help me get my goal. The passion we played with I believe is something very important for us to build on and utilize for our further success.”

Sidibe’s goal tied the game at 2, but neither team could score again in the intense final 10 minutes that would follow. Both teams were eliminated from the playoffs and nearly every player on the field lay on their backs in disbelief after the final seconds ticked off.

“It was a very bitter feeling,” said Sidibe. “Giving 100% and still not being able to get the win was devastating.”

The Golden Griffins, now with a 1-9-5 (0-4-3) record on the season, will host the Marist Red Foxes on Saturday at 1 PM.

Stats for the game

The Broncs recorded 30 shots (10 on goal) while the Golden Griffins recorded 13 shots (7 on goal).

Golden Griffins Graduate Student Spencer Catalano recorded 8 saves while the Broncs Sophomore goalkeeper recorded 5 saves.

The Broncs had 9 corners while the Golden Griffins had 6 corners.

The Broncs got called for 13 fouls while the Golden Griffins got called for 9 fouls.

Cross Country Finishes Regular Season with Excellent Performance at Alumni Classic

Written by: Andrew Nowel

The Canisius Golden Griffins finished up their regular season by returning home to host the Canisius Alumni Classic this past Saturday. With energy coming from everyone at the meet, the Golden Griffins were propelled to a 1st place finish for the women and a 2nd place finish for the men. Behind strong performances from nearly every runner, both teams finished off a very good regular season with high hopes for what is to come next.

The women placed 1st, beating out the Binghamton Bearcats by 16 points. The Golden Griffins scored 24 with Graduate Student Olivia Moran once again leading the way for them. Moran ran a 17:14.5 to place 1st in the women’s 5k while Senior Jules Jones placed 3rd with a time of 17:49.4. Junior Kayla Schmidt placed 5th with a time of 18:00.5 and 5th Year Marissa Silba placed 6th with a time of 18:02.5. Sophomore Jacqueline Appenheimer rounded out the Golden Griffins by placing 9th with a time of 18:29.6. To have all 5 runners for the Golden Griffins place in the top 10 was a huge accomplishment, and it will help their motivation for the MAACs and the Northeast Regional which are both right around the corner.

“The meet went very well,” said Silba on Monday. “It’s encouraging to see that we are peaking at the perfect time [with the] MAACs in 2 weeks. I think there were personal bests nearly across the board for the women’s team, so it’s really awesome to see everything come together and create a good showing on our home course.”

Silba is really happy to see the team have continuous success this season as they head toward the MAAC championship meet, but also the NCAA Northeast Regional as they ranked 14th for the 1st time in program history.

“The place that we are in this year is something I’ve never seen,” said Silba. “The atmosphere, the workouts, the close-knit bond of the team is just unique to this year and is undoubtedly the reason we were just ranked regionally for the 1st time in the program’s history.”

The men also had an excellent meet as they scored 41 points, placing 2nd behind the Bearcats. Led by 3rd place finish, Graduate Student Tom Appenheimer, with a time of 24:11.6 in the men’s 8k. Sophomore Kyle Urban placed 7th with a time of 24:49.1 with Graduate Student Andrew Perreault following Urban by placing 8th with a time of 24:56.8. Seniors Max Chew and Pat Garland finished 11th and 17th with times of 25:07.8 and 25:31.4 respectively. The men also finished their regular season with a great race as they prepare for the MAAC championship.

“I think our men’s team had a great race, one of the best ones this season with everyone excited to be there and working together as a team,” said Urban this afternoon.

The Golden Griffins alumni also raced as a team with the women placing 10th while the men placed 5th. It was a great experience for new and returning members of the Canisius family to have as the Golden Griffins finished their regular season.

“The Canisius classic gives this atmosphere of excitement like no other,” said Silba. “The other teams present, the alumni Griffs, all the parents coming out to support along with schools in the nearby area that we tend to know the runners on just makes it so hype. The cross country team is a family, and we run for each other.”

The 2023 MAAC Championship will take place on October 28th with the time to be announced in Montgomery, New York.

Men’s Soccer Falls 2-1 to Mountaineers, Winless Streak to 10

Written by: Andrew Nowel

The Canisius Golden Griffins men’s soccer team came into their game on Saturday against the Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers with a renewed mindset even though they were on a 9-game winless streak. The Mountaineers had other plans, and though the Golden Griffins fought until the final whistle, the Mountaineers defeated them 2-1 to extend the Golden Griffins winless streak to 10.

The 1st half was very balanced as neither team had a strong advantage of possession or scoring chances. Both teams created chances, and the Mountaineers struck 1st at the 24th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Just before halftime, the Golden Griffins returned the favor by tying the game at 1 behind Junior forward Dylan Rice’s 2nd goal of the season. The Mountaineers outshot the Golden Griffins 6-4 and each team only had 1 shot on goal which both went into the net.

The Golden Griffins needed to come out of the half with energy to keep up the energy that they went into the half with coming from Rice’s goal. However, the Mountaineers dominated the 2nd half as they controlled the possession and though both shot attempts for the Golden Griffins went on net, they couldn’t get any more chances while the Mountaineers made the Golden Griffin defense and Junior goalkeeper Jack Petrie work hard to keep the game tied.

At the 70:28 mark of the game, the Mountaineers were able to get the ball past Petrie to take a 2-1 lead. The Golden Griffins needed to find urgency which could help them tie the game again, but this time the Mountaineers shut down on defense and didn’t let the Golden Griffins into the final third for most of those remaining 20 minutes. After the game, Golden Griffins Head Coach Michael Tanke was disappointed that the team lost again, but the team knows that they just need to keep playing hard and to not give up on the season just yet.

“Throughout the majority of the game, you can see there were a lot of positives and long moments where we dictated the play, but in order to take that lead or maintain it; it’s about getting through certain moments and unfortunately we didn’t twice,” said Freshman forward Matthew Fischer. “There is still a lot of belief within this team and even with these results, we have a mission that we set out at the beginning of the year, and we will continue to persevere even in times of severe struggle.”

The Golden Griffins will return home to host the Rider Broncs this afternoon at 4 PM.

Stats for the game

The Mountaineers recorded 15 shots (5 on goal) while the Golden Griffins recorded 6 shots (3 on goal).

Petrie recorded 3 saves while the Mountaineers Senior goalkeeper recorded 2 saves.

The Mountaineers had 8 corners while the Golden Griffins had 7 corners.

The Mountaineers got called for 13 fouls while the Golden Griffins got called for 10 fouls.

Volleyball Goes 1-1 as Loussia Earns 1050th Kill

Written by: Andrew Nowel

This past week, the Canisius Golden Griffins volleyball team took the court against the Marist Red Foxes on Saturday and the Siena Saints on Sunday. After a tough 3-1 loss to the Red Foxes, the Golden Griffins bounced back to beat the Saints 3-1. During the 4th set of the match against the Red Foxes, Graduate Student outside hitter Ella Loussia earned her 1050th kill which put her 10th all-time in the Canisius record books.

The Golden Griffins started off with a 1st set win against the Red Foxes, taking a 1-0 lead in the match. The Red Foxes entered the match with an 8-1 MAAC record, so it wasn’t a surprise when the Red Foxes won the 2nd set to even the match at 1. Though the Golden Griffins wouldn’t win another set, they fought hard in every set. The Red Foxes were leading 2-1 in sets and 15-12 in the 4th set when Loussia went up for a kill and scored her 1050th kill of her career. It was a big accomplishment for Loussia, and it helped the team to forget about the score and the eventual loss for a little bit.

“It’s such a big honor for my name to be in the record books at Canisius,” said Loussia on Monday. “I cannot express enough gratitude towards my family, specifically my parents, for making this all possible.”

The Golden Griffins came into Sunday’s match with one goal in mind which was to win the match. The Golden Griffins crushed the Saints in the 1st set, 25-11 which led to a dominant match. Though the Saints won the 2nd set, 25-22, the Golden Griffins won the final 2 sets to win the match 3-1. Loussia had an excellent match against the Saints after breaking the record the previous day. She earned 17 kills, 4 blocks, and 19 points to lead the way for the Golden Griffins. This padded what she already had surpassed the previous day with her total kills with an added bonus of a win.

“It meant even more to get a win whilst moving up in the record books because winning is always my 1st priority,” said Loussia. “This win was a huge one to bring team morale back where it needs to be and to keep us in the playoff picture. I am very excited for what the rest of the season has in store for us!”

The Golden Griffins, now with a 6-12 (4-6) record on the season, will remain at home next weekend and will host the Fairfield Stags on Saturday at 12 PM.

Stats for the weekend

Golden Griffins (against Red Foxes)- 67 points, 49 kills, 9 aces, 9 blocks, 47 assists, and 71 digs.

Red Foxes- 73 points, 60 kills, 3 aces, 10 blocks, 54 assists, and 82 digs.

Golden Griffins (against Saints)- 71 points, 57 kills, 10 aces, 4 blocks, 54 assists, and 64 digs.

Saints- 51 points, 38 kills, 7 aces, 6 blocks, 37 assists, and 51 digs.

Women’s Soccer Shuts Out Mountaineers 1-0 Behind Harkness’ 1st Collegiate Goal

Written by: Andrew Nowel

It was another cool afternoon in Buffalo, New York this past Saturday as the Canisius Golden Griffins women’s soccer team took the field against the Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers. Behind yet another 1st collegiate goal, the Golden Griffins won another crucial conference game by a score of 1-0. Sophomore midfielder Lizzy Harkness led the way to the victory with her goal.

The 1st half was back-and-forth for both teams as neither had control of the ball for much of the half. The Golden Griffins put 6 shot attempts toward the Mountaineers goalkeeper, but only 2 went on net. Golden Griffins Junior goalkeeper Jordan Spencer made 1 save on 1 shot on goal with 4 attempted shots from the Mountaineers in the 1st half. The Mountaineers had 3 corners which should have gotten better scoring chances for them, but the Golden Griffins defense held strong and didn’t give in.

Golden Griffins Head Coach Ryan Louis told the team at halftime that they just needed to keep playing the same game and the chances will come. The Golden Griffins came out in the 2nd half with renewed energy, and it showed as they would outshoot the Mountaineers 8-2 on shot attempts in the 2nd half. At the 64th minute, the Golden Griffins found the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead. The goal was assisted by Freshman midfielder Jessica Whitaker, and it was a special goal for the team as it was Harkness’ 1st collegiate goal. It was also a big goal as it would be the winning goal with the Mountaineers being shut down the rest of the half.

“I was really excited to score my 1st goal and contribute towards the team’s goal tally after seeing a lot of the other girls score their 1st collegiate goal this season,” said Harkness on Monday. “Another win is really important for the team as we’re going into one of the toughest weeks of the season, so it’s nice going into it on a positive note with a good mentality.”

The Golden Griffins won 1-0, improving their record to 7-2-5 (4-1-2) on the season. Harkness and the team know the goal that they have been working towards since the middle of August when practice started: to secure a home playoff game.

“Getting the win means that we’re another step closer to securing a home playoff game which would be a huge achievement for the team and program as a whole, and it would really show just how hard we’ve worked to get to where we are,” said Harkness. “Hopefully now, we can see out the remainder of the regular season in good form leading into the playoffs.”

The Golden Griffins will head out on their final road trip and begin the trip on Wednesday at 4 PM in Lawrenceville, New Jersey at Rider University against the Broncs.

Stats for the game

The Golden Griffins recorded 14 shots (6 on goal) while the Mountaineers recorded 6 shots (3 on goal).

Spencer recorded 3 saves while the Mountaineers Graduate Student goalkeeper recorded 5 saves.

The Golden Griffins had 5 corners while the Mountaineers had 4 corners.

The Golden Griffins got called for 9 fouls while the Mountaineers also got called for 11 fouls.

Swim and Dive Fall in Opening Meet Against Red Foxes

Written by: Andrew Nowel

The Canisius Golden Griffins swim and dive team jumped into the pools on Friday to kick off the 2023-2024 season. They raced well at the meet, but the Marist Red Foxes outraced them to a 196-84 victory for the men while the Golden Griffin women fell 165-129.

It was a tough way to get the season started for the Golden Griffins, but it wasn’t all bad for them as a couple swimmers shined in the 1st meet of the season. The Golden Griffin women had a couple of strong performances as Freshman Brenna McLaughlin earned 3 first place finishes. She earned a time of 1:00.22 in the 100 Back which was 1st, earning her team 9 points. McLaughlin earned a time of 2:08.61 in the 200 Back, placing 1st again which earned the team another 9 points. She wasn’t done with 1st place finishes as she won the 200 IM with a time of 2:12.16, earning yet another 9 points for the Golden Griffins.

“I was pretty happy with my races yesterday,” said McLaughlin on Saturday. “I was pretty satisfied with all of my times considering it was my season opener. It was really exciting to watch everyone race yesterday.”

One of the captains of the women’s team, Senior Jordan O’Connor, also had a great day in the pool as she finished 2nd in the 100 Back, 18 milliseconds behind McLaughlin and earned 4 points. She also finished 3rd in the 50 Free with a time of 25.82 earning 3 points with Sophomore Mandy Hill finishing 2nd in that race which earned the Golden Griffins 4 more points. Overall, the Golden Griffin women raced very well, but just couldn’t outrace the Red Foxes in some of the top spots to gain more points.

“Some positive takeaways from the meet are that our team can get up and race even after a long travel day,” said McLaughlin. “I’m really excited to see how we can do at our home pool in the coming weeks.”

The Golden Griffin men fell to the Red Foxes by a decently big margin. However, the young swimmers on the men’s team stood out as Freshman Marin de Villard placed 1st in the 100 Back and 200 Back. Villard raced a time of 51.30 in the 100 Back and 1:54.90 in the 200 Back, earning 9 points in both races. Freshman Elliot Somers came in 2nd in both of those races, earning the Golden Griffins 4 more points in both races. Junior Bronson Benes earned 9 points by placing 1st in the 200 Fly with a 1:55.90 time. Benes and both the women and men knew that this race was about learning the identity of this year’s team as new members learned how either to swim at the collegiate level or they were learning the different culture that the Golden Griffins brought to a meet.

“Today's races were all about learning to race,” said Benes after the meet. “For the upperclass men, it was about regaining the feel of our races and figuring out how to advance our race plans. For the Freshman, it was about experiencing what a college dual meet is like, and how they react physically and mentality to it. All together, everyone learned a lot about themselves and will be using that to get faster and closer as a team.”

The Golden Griffins will travel to Rochester, New York to compete in a tri-meet against the Rochester Yellow Jackets and the Siena Saints at 1 PM on Saturday.

Ice Hockey Falls in First 2 Games of Season

Written by: Andrew Nowel

The Canisius Golden Griffins ice hockey team began their 2023-2024 season on Friday on the road against the Miami (OH) RedHawks. After falling 4-2 on Friday, the Golden Griffins rematched the RedHawks on Saturday and also lost that game by a score of 4-1.

Starting 0-2-0 isn’t what the Golden Griffins wanted, but that’s how their season will start off. Friday’s game was dominated by the RedHawks as they took a 2-0 lead early in the 1st period. With 2:25 to play in the period, Senior forward Randy Hernandez found the back of the net to shorten the RedHawks’ lead down to 2-1. It was Hernandez’s 1st goal of the season and Senior defenseman Jackson Decker was awarded his 1st assist of the season. The Golden Griffins would score 1 more goal, by Freshman forward Matteo Giampa; his 1st collegiate goal, but fell to the RedHawks 4-2.

On Saturday, the Golden Griffins went into the 1st intermission down 2-0 after a very late goal was scored in the 1st period by the RedHawks. A power play goal was added to make it 3-0 for the RedHawks until the Golden Griffins power play struck back. With 11:32 to play in the 2nd period, the captain, Senior forward Max Kouznetsov, found the back of the net on the power play to bring the RedHawks lead down to 3-1. It was Kouznetsov’s 1st goal of the season with Hernandez getting his 1st assist and Decker getting his 2nd assist of the season.

The Golden Griffins would lose Saturday’s game 4-1, and they were frustrated that the games hadn’t gone their way. However, they looked at both games and realized that there were many small mistakes that will be fixed as the season progresses.

“We took away some key systematic points that we have to be more aware of on the ice,” said Hernandez this afternoon. “Things like crashing the net, winning more individual battles, and supporting each other on the puck.”

The Golden Griffins were 1 for 6 on the power play after both games, and they knew that they could do better by analyzing what didn’t work to make the needed changes this upcoming week in practice.

“Power play plays a huge factor for any team,” said Hernandez. “We have to go back to the drawing board and look at video on what we can change to get more opportunities. It’s very early to the season, and we have a lot of belief in this team. We just have to stick with the process and we’ll see the results.”

The Golden Griffins continue their road trip with games on Thursday and Friday at Michigan State University against the Spartans with both games starting at 7 PM.

Stats for the series against the RedHawks

Golden Griffins- 51 shots, -15 rating, 41% faceoffs, 39 penalty minutes, and 29 blocks.

Senior goalie David Fessenden had 57 saves with 8 goals against.

RedHawks- 65 shots, +15 rating, 69% faceoffs, 24 penalty minutes, and 18 blocks.

The RedHawks Graduate Student goalie had 48 saves with 3 goals against.

Women’s Soccer Tie Saints 1-1 Behind Whitakers’ Tying Goal

Written by: Andrew Nowel

The conditions weren’t great, but the Canisius Golden Griffins women’s soccer team fought against the Siena Saints on Wednesday afternoon. Through 90 minutes of gritty soccer, the Golden Griffins tied the Saints 1-1. Behind Freshman midfielder Jessica Whitaker, the Golden Griffins moved their record to 6-2-5 (3-1-2) after a battle with a good conference opponent.

The 1st half was not controlled by 1 team or the other. The Saints came out strong at the beginning, but the Golden Griffins worked their way up the field to get a lot of high scoring chances. Both goalies had to be on their game on Wednesday as it was cold and rainy which didn’t help the poor conditions that the game was being played in. Golden Griffins Junior goalkeeper Jordan Spencer faced 7 shot attempts in the 1st half with 5 going on goal. She stopped all of them, and the Golden Griffins created chances on the opposite end of the field.

The Golden Griffins went into the half with some energy left over which helped them come out of the half with a couple of scoring chances. However, at the 52:59 mark of the game, the Saints struck 1st, beating Spencer on their 2nd shot attempt of the half.

With a 1-0 deficit to make up, the Golden Griffins needed to get their offense going, but the Saints used the goal to gain momentum. Eventually, the Golden Griffins started to create scoring chances, and after a pass from Junior defender Sophia Konstantinou found the foot of Whitaker, she fired the ball into the net to tie the game at 1. It was Whitaker’s 2nd goal of the season with Konstantinou getting awarded the assist. This was a big goal for the Golden Griffins, but they couldn’t beat the Saints goalkeeper the rest of the game.

The rest of the game went without a goal and the Golden Griffins and Saints tied 1-1. Whitaker, after the game, and the team were frustrated to get a tie against the Saints, but they knew that they had to refocus with a big game coming up tomorrow.

“Tying a tough match, in what I thought we were the better team for the most part, is frustrating, but it also offers valuable lessons for the team,” said Whitaker. “The mindset of the team may be affected with a mix of disappointment to carry on playing how we have been and get a valuable 3 points on Saturday.”

The Golden Griffins will host the Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers tomorrow at 1 PM in their 2023 Pink Game.

Stats for the game

The Golden Griffins recorded 19 shots (8 on goal) while the Saints recorded 14 shots (7 on goal).

Spencer recorded 6 saves while the Saints Graduate Student goalkeeper recorded 7 saves.

The Golden Griffins had 10 corners while the Saints had 3 corners.

The Golden Griffins got called for 16 fouls while the Saints also got called for 8 fouls.

Men’s Soccer Allows 3 Goals in 2nd Half, Falls to Saints 3-1

Written by: Andrew Nowel

On a chilly and rainy day in Loudonville, New York, the Canisius Golden Griffins men’s soccer team faced off against the Siena Saints. The Golden Griffins were trying to end a very long winless streak to get themselves back into playoff contention, but the Saints had other plans as after the Golden Griffins held a 1-0 halftime lead, the Saints scored 3 goals in the 2nd half to win the game 3-1, pushing the Golden Griffins winless streak to 9 games.

The Golden Griffins didn’t overpower the Saints in the 1st half, but they were able to put a couple of good scoring chances toward the net. The Golden Griffins had 3 shots on goal while the Saints had 2, but the Golden Griffins found the back of the net on Junior forward Dylan Rice’s 1st goal of the season at the 38:01 mark of the 1st half. Graduate Student defender Inder Thind was awarded the assist on the goal.

With a 1-0 lead, the Golden Griffins continued to play well defensively behind strong communication between Junior goalkeeper Jack Petrie and the Golden Griffins defense. At halftime, the Saints had 13 shot attempts with none going in.

The Golden Griffins came out in the 2nd half with the same energy which gave them the opportunity to extend their lead. However, the Saints quickly started to create even higher scoring chances which led to the tying goal being scored at the 69th minute. Less than 2 minutes later, the Saints scored again to take a 2-1 lead. This was frustrating for the Golden Griffins as they had played well, but just couldn’t get more offense to help their defense.

At the 77th minute of the game, the Saints extended their lead to 3-1 which finished off the Golden Griffins to hand them their 9th straight game without a win. Freshman defender Kevin Villacorta was disappointed with the loss, as was the rest of the team, but he knew that they just had to move on and focus on their next game if they wanted to win that game.

“Today was a tough loss for the team, however, we ultimately have to move on,” said Villacorta after the game. “We created momentum in the 1st half that eventually led to a 1-0 lead. Unfortunately, we lost that momentum and conceded. Despite taking away positives and negatives from today’s game, we go again Saturday in a big game against Mount.”

The Golden Griffins will travel to Emmitsburg, Maryland to face the Mount St. Mary’s (MD) Mountaineers on Saturday at 1 PM.

Stats for the game

The Saints recorded 22 shots (5 on goal) while the Golden Griffins recorded 6 shots (5 on goal).

Petrie recorded 2 saves while the Saints Freshman goalkeeper recorded 4 saves.

The Saints had 9 corners while the Golden Griffins had 0 corners.

The Saints got called for 9 fouls while the Golden Griffins got called for 5 fouls.

Golf Finishes 15th at Bucknell Invitational

Written by: Andrew Nowel

The Canisius Golden Griffins golf team was back in action this past weekend at the Bucknell Invitational where they played well and would finish 15th. After shooting over 300 on Sunday, the Golden Griffins bounced back behind Junior Ryan Edholm’s 8-over finish and Freshman Alex Schickling’s 11-over finish. They finished at a total of 898, or 58-over, which continued their progress as a young team improving with every tournament.

Edholm had a rough start to the tournament on Sunday as did the Golden Griffins in general as he shot a 79 on Sunday with the weather not cooperating with what the golfers would have preferred. Schickling shot a 75 on Sunday which wasn’t bad with the conditions that everyone was playing in. Both Edholm and Schickling knew that the conditions were frustrating to play in because their scores reflected a tough day, but they both knew that they could play well on the course and showed that the next 2 days.

Edholm shot a 70 on Monday which was a 9-shot improvement from the previous day. He would do even better on Tuesday as he shot a 69 to finish his total score at 218, or 8-over. Edholm was very happy with the improvement as Schickling would also improve his score by the end of Tuesday. Schickling shot a 75 again on Monday, but improved by 4 shots on Tuesday by shooting a 71 which finished his tournament at a total score of 221, or 11-over. Schickling felt great with the performance even though he knew that he left chances to improve out on the course, and he was very happy to see the Freshmen class get off to a great start on Sunday.

“I definitely left a lot out there, but that’s just golf,” said Schickling on Wednesday. “It can always be better, but it was nice to go out and shoot a good score on the final round to try and move us up the rankings as well as myself. [Freshman] Mikey [Takacs] is a great golfer. I played with him during the offseason, and he’s extremely motivated and always strides to be the best he can be on and off the course.”

Edholm tied 27th while Schickling tied 41st with the next Golden Griffin coming in at tied-79th with a score of 228, or 18-over. Freshman Jake Dantonio shot a 76-75-77 during the tournament to get this score. The team was very happy with the improvement from Sunday to Tuesday, but knew that they could have played better regardless of what conditions they were playing in.

“One thing I saw that was a lot better at this event was the mentality of everyone,” said Schickling. “We didn’t play the greatest, but despite that, everyone had high hopes and everyone was in good spirits. Golf is a mental game, so it was really nice to see all the guys in a good mood despite not playing the best.”

The Golden Griffins will travel to Milford, Connecticut this upcoming weekend from Sunday to Tuesday for the Sacred Heart Fall Classic.

Volleyball Takes Down Broncs in Intense 5-Set Match

Written by: Andrew Nowel

On a Sunday afternoon in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, the Canisius Golden Griffins volleyball team took the court to face off against the Rider Broncs. It was a big conference game for both teams, and it seemed like the Golden Griffins had it in control after the first 2 sets. However, the Broncs didn’t give up, but the Golden Griffins held on to defeat the Broncs in a 5-set match 3-2.

The Golden Griffins got off a 10-6 lead in the 1st set and didn’t let up as they defeated the Broncs 25-15. Led by Freshman outside hitter Lauren Hubert’s 5 kills, the Golden Griffins dominated the Broncs. It was a great continuation of the offensive attack of the previous match from the Golden Griffins. This helped them win the 2nd set by a score of 25-20 as the offense continued to play well. Hubert continued to play well and both Junior outside hitter Kara Zaucha and Sophomore middle blocker Bella Mosquera also finished off chances created by Sophomore setter Ella Bourque.

With a 2-0 lead, the Golden Griffins tried to put away the Broncs, but they didn’t go down easily. The 3rd set started back-and-forth, but the Broncs took a 17-8 lead and never looked back. They won the set 25-17, and the Golden Griffins’ lead was down to 2-1. During this set, Sophomore setter Shannon Kehoe earned 5 assists and helped the Golden Griffins stay in the set as they made a small comeback that came up short.

The Broncs got off to a strong start in the 4th set as they took an early 7-4 lead. The Golden Griffins worked their way back to a 11-7 lead by Zaucha, Mosquera, and Hubert all earning kills. The Golden Griffins struggled to maintain the lead as the Broncs took a 18-16 lead. The Broncs went on a run and won the 4th set 25-18, tying the match at 2.

Going into the weekend, the Golden Griffins knew that they had to go 2-0 to continue pushing for the postseason.

“This past weekend included 2 must-win matches in order to continue to strive for our goal of making the postseason tournament,” said Zaucha on Monday. “All the players that were there knew that it would be in our best interest to have a 2-0 weekend.”

The Golden Griffins used this energy to win the 5th set by a score of 17-15. It wasn’t easy as the Broncs had a 15-14 lead, putting the Golden Griffins on the edge of losing the match, but the Golden Griffins fought and behind a service error from the Broncs, a Hubert kill, and a Bronc attack error, the Golden Griffins won 3-2 in an intense 5-set match.

This was a huge win for the Golden Griffins, and it will help them going forward, showing that they are tough in pressure situations.

“These wins will help us move higher in the rankings and also allow us to use the winning momentum to drive us into another huge weekend,” said Zaucha. “Our 1st chance at Marist and Siena this year will surely be 2 exciting matches. Our Rider match on Sunday proved to others that we can execute in pressure scenarios which is a good tool to have in our toolbox.”

The Golden Griffins will return home to host the Marist Red Foxes at 12 PM on Saturday.

Stats for the match

Golden Griffins- 63 points, 55 kills, 4 aces, 4 blocks, 54 assists, and 89 digs.

Broncs- 75 points, 58 kills, 8 aces, 9 blocks, 56 assists, and 87 digs.

Men’s Soccer Tie Stags 1-1, Elusive 2nd Win Continues

Written by: Andrew Nowel

On a very cool Saturday afternoon in Buffalo, New York, the Canisius Golden Griffins men’s soccer team took the field to face yet another MAAC opponent, the Fairfield Stags. The Golden Griffins hadn’t won a game in over a month, but they had confidence in today’s matchup. After 45 minutes of play, the Golden Griffins held a 1-0 lead at half, but the Stags wouldn’t back down, and the game ended in a 1-1 tie, continuing the winless streak for the Golden Griffins.

The Golden Griffins had a great start to the game as the energy was up even though the conditions weren’t great. Though the Golden Griffins created a lot of quality chances, only 6 went toward the net as attempts with 2 going on goal. At the 35:48 mark of the 1st half, however, the Golden Griffins found the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead behind Sophomore midfielder Glodie Mata’s 3rd goal of the season. It created a sense of energy that the Golden Griffins tried to use to add to the lead, but couldn’t before halftime.

Head Coach Michael Tanke told Golden Griffin ESPN sideline reporter, Vinnie Christiano III, at halftime that the wind was going to be a problem in the 2nd half, and Coach Tanke wanted his players to keep the energy up which would help face the wind problem head on.

The 2nd half was very defensive for both teams as neither team wanted to allow the next goal even though the Stags were down 1-0. It wouldn’t take long for the Stags to control the possession of the ball and work their way up the field. Golden Griffins Junior  goalkeeper Jack Petrie had an excellent game, but couldn’t stop all of them as at the 62nd minute, the Stags tied the game at 1. It was very frustrating for Petrie and the defense because they had played a great game, but the team couldn’t find the same chances and energy as they had in the 1st half.

“As much as we were on the defensive side, we still battled, and we were strong not to give up too much like we have in past games, having great energy and willingness to defend in tough moments,” said Freshman midfielder AJ Zarcone after the game. “Overall, as much as we showed our most fight all season in this game, it wasn’t the prettiest soccer we’ve played, and the 2nd half reflected that.”

The game would end in a 1-1 tie which was frustrating for the Golden Griffins who were now 1-7-4 (0-2-2) on the season, failing to win their 2nd game of the season yet again. Zarcone knew that if they combined some of the things that went well in this game with some of the things that have gone well in previous games, they could be a very dangerous team.

“It’s finding the balance,” said Zarcone. “Combining a beautiful style of soccer we have shown in the past and the grit we showed against Fairfield, it can really make us a dangerous team going forward. [It] makes Wednesday against Siena another big game that we hope to come out with a positive result.”

The Golden Griffins will travel to face off against the Siena Saints on Wednesday at 3 PM.

Stats for the game

The Stags recorded 13 shots (3 on goal) while the Golden Griffins recorded 10 shots (4 on goal).

Petrie recorded 2 saves while the Stags Senior goalkeeper recorded 3 saves.

The Stags had 6 corners while the Golden Griffins had 2 corners.

The Stags got called for 12 fouls while the Golden Griffins got called for 9 fouls.

Women’s Soccer Defeat Stags 1-0 Victory Behind Spencer’s 8th Shutout of Season

Written by: Andrew Nowel

On a chilly afternoon in Fairfield, Connecticut, the Canisius Golden Griffins women’s soccer team took the field on the road against the Fairfield Stags in what would turn out to be an intense game of great goaltending from Golden Griffin Junior Jordan Spencer and great defense from the Golden Griffins. Behind Spencer’s 8th shutout of the season and Sophomore midfielder Skylar Cornell’s 3rd goal of the season, the Golden Griffins defeated the Stags 1-0 to improve to 6-2-4 (3-1-1) on the season.

It was a balanced 1st half as neither team had control of the ball long enough to create too many high scoring chances. The Stags had 3 shot attempts in the 1st half with 2 of them going on goal which Spencer stopped. The Golden Griffins had 2 shot attempts with only 1 going on goal which found the back of the net after Cornell shot the ball past the Stags goalkeeper. Junior midfielder Emma Oliphant was awarded with the assist as the Golden Griffins took the 1-0 lead into halftime.

The 2nd half was all Stags as they came out of the half with a renewed energy that the Golden Griffins had trouble matching. However, Spencer and her defense was perfect through the rest of the half as the Stags put on 15 attempted shots, but none found the back of the net as the Golden Griffins won the game 1-0. Spencer was very happy with her performance, but was ecstatic with how the back line and her have worked so well together this season.

“As for shutouts, defensively, we are very hard to break down, and we showed that again today,” said Spencer after the game. “Our cohesiveness as a back line has gotten us this far, and I am excited to see how far it can take us.”

The team was very pleased to be 3-1-1 in the MAAC as they continued to play well against their opponents and be in every single game. Spencer and the entire team really appreciate how their hard work is paying off this season.

“I think that we need [to] appreciate how far we’ve come in the last 2 years,” said Spencer. “My Freshman year, we lost 3-0 against Fairfield on their field, and I had 15 saves. Today, we walked away with a 1-0 win on their field, and I only had to make 3 saves. This is hard earned progress, and I could not be prouder of my team! Going forward, we need to use the win to build our confidence while also staying gritty because every conference game is a fight whether it is against the best or worst in the conference.”

The Golden Griffins will return home to host the Siena Saints on Wednesday at 4 PM to try to continue their dominance in the MAAC.

Stats for the game

The Stags recorded 18 shots (3 on goal) while the Golden Griffins recorded 5 shots (3 on goal).

Spencer recorded 3 saves while the Stags Sophomore goalkeeper recorded 2 saves.

The Stags had 5 corners while the Golden Griffins had 4 corners.

The Stags got called for 10 fouls while the Golden Griffins also got called for 10 fouls.

Volleyball Sweeps Peacocks to Begin Garden State Trip

Written by: Andrew Nowel

The Canisius Golden Griffins volleyball team traveled to New Jersey for a 2-day trip, starting with a match against the Saint Peter’s Peacocks this afternoon. It was a one-sided match as the Golden Griffins dominated the court which felt good after last weekend struggling against the Niagara Purple Eagles. The Golden Griffins took a 3-0 match win with the hope that they can carry the momentum into their upcoming MAAC matches.

The Golden Griffins came out in the 1st set with a mission: to dominate the Peacocks and control the match as a whole. They started the set back-and-forth, but began to take control behind kills from Junior middle blocker Emma Mans. Mans would earn 11 kills throughout the entire match and helped the Golden Griffins take the 1st set 25-17 over the Peacocks.

With a 1-0 lead in the match, the Golden Griffins continued on with the offensive attack. Behind Sophomore middle blocker Bella Mosquera’s 14 total kills in the match, the Golden Griffins defeated the Peacocks 25-19 in the 2nd set to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Mosquera was very pleased with the team’s offensive performance today even without one of their main attackers, Freshman outside hitter Cameron Grange.

“We had some strong offensive connections on the court today,” said Mosquera after the match. “We used [that] to our advantage and [it] will definitely help us stay grounded in the long run.”

The Golden Griffins were without Anna Lynch once again, so the bench was thin which hurt the rest time that the starters got, but that didn’t deter the Golden Griffins to play very well in the 3rd set. They defeated the Peacocks 25-21 in the 3rd set, defeating the Peacocks 3-0 in the match. Freshman outside hitter Lauren Hubert had another excellent match with 6 kills, 4 aces, and 10.5 points to help the Golden Griffins improve to 3-11 (1-5) on the season.

The Golden Griffins will finish the NJ trip tomorrow at Rider University at 1 PM against the Rider Broncs.

Stats for the match

Golden Griffins- 75 points, 45 kills, 8 aces, 6 blocks, 38 assists, and 28 digs.

Peacocks- 57 points, 31 kills, 5 aces, 5 blocks, 28 assists, and 25 digs.

Men’s Soccer’s Struggles Seem Endless after 4-1 Loss to Gaels

Written by: Andrew Nowel

The Canisius Golden Griffins men’s soccer team took the field last Sunday on the road against the Iona Gaels. They were really wanting to get a win since they were coming into the game with a 6-game winless streak. After 90 minutes of hard fought soccer from the Golden Griffins, the Gaels defeated the Golden Griffins 4-1, extending the winless streak to 7 games.

The Gaels took no time to get on the scoreboard as 3 minutes into the game, they took a 1-0 lead, beating Junior goalkeeper Jack Petrie on one of their first shots. The Golden Griffins couldn’t get the ball past midfield much of the 1st half as the Gaels dominated them throughout the half. At the 20:26 mark of the game, the Gaels scored again, taking a 2-0 lead in a game that seemed to be headed toward a blowout. Petrie and the defense, however, told the Gaels otherwise as they would hold the Gaels to nothing more as the Golden Griffins built up a scoring chance.

At the 34:37 mark of the 1st half, the Golden Griffins shortened the Gaels lead down to 2-1 when Sophomore midfielder Glodie Mata found the back of the net on the Golden Griffins 2nd shot attempt of the half. It was Mata’s 2nd goal of the season with the assist being awarded to Junior forward Ely Sidibe. This was a great spark for the Golden Griffins, but it was squashed right away as the Gaels scored not even 2 minutes later to take a 3-1 lead.

Halftime was frustrating for Head Coach Michael Tanke’s team as they knew what they wanted to do, but the Gaels, with their 12 shot attempts, held control of the game. Things wouldn’t get much better for the Golden Griffins as the Gaels would score 1 more time before the game ended, winning the game 4-1.

The Golden Griffins only had 3 shot attempts throughout the game with 1 on goal which went in from Mata in the 1st half. The Gaels had 25 shot attempts with 15 on goal and 4 goals. Petrie and the rest of the team knew that they just needed to concede less goals and keep creating scoring chances to be able to win games.

“We’ve been in every game this season and have been creating good chances to score,” said Petrie on Thursday. “If we keep chipping away at it, the results will come. Our biggest problem has been conceding too many goals. We’ve been focusing on coming together more as a unit to not let these chances happen. We will be locking in to finish out the season with a bunch of wins.”

The Golden Griffins move to 1-7-3 (0-2-1) on the season and will host the Fairfield Stags at 1 PM tomorrow hoping to get back on track against a MAAC opponent.

Stats for the game

The Gaels recorded 25 shots (15 on goal) while the Golden Griffins recorded 3 shots (1 on goal).

Petrie recorded 11 saves while the Gaels Junior goalkeeper recorded 0 saves.

The Gaels had 7 corners while the Golden Griffins had 0 corners.

The Gaels got called for 14 fouls while the Golden Griffins got called for 11 fouls.

Golf Finishes Tied-7th Behind Edholm’s 5-under Finish

Written by: Andrew Nowel

The Canisius Golden Griffins golf team traveled to Apalachin, New York to play in the Matthews Auto Collegiate this past weekend. They would finish tied-7th behind a stellar performance from Junior Ryan Edholm who finished with a score of 5-under for the 2-day tournament.

Edholm started Day 1 with confidence after struggling in his last tournament. He shot a 70 on Day 1 which was only 2 or 3 shots behind everyone he would finish behind after the tournament was over. Edholm shot 1 better than St. Bonaventure Sophomore Michael Bucko who would have an amazing turnaround by shooting a 67 the next day to overtake Edholm in the final standings.

Edholm was very pleased with his performance in Day 1 and took that into Day 2 to put up an even better score. Edholm shot a 69 on Day 2, finishing his tournament with a 139 which was a 5-under. He placed 7th, 1 shot behind Bucko and 2 shots behind 2nd place.

“I played really well this weekend; it was good to play how I know I can after kind of a disappointing start to my season,” said Edholm on Wednesday. “Hopefully, [I] can build off this and find my name at the top of a leaderboard in the next 2 weeks.”

Freshman Jake Dantonio tied-30th with a score of 147, or 3-over while both Freshmen Mikey Takacs and Alex Schickling shot a 150, or 6-over.

The Golden Griffins also had a great tournament as they shot a 588 as a team which was 12-over and placed them at tied-7th with 3 other teams. The big victory for the Golden Griffins was topping the Niagara Purple Eagles who scored a 601, 13 shots below the Golden Griffins. Even though the 2nd round score wasn’t what the team wanted; it wasn’t far off from what they wanted, Edholm explained.

“As a team, we had a very good event; room to improve on the 2nd round score, but if that’s the highest we shoot, I’d say that’s pretty good,” said Edholm. “Having a couple weeks off helped us work on some things we may not have done well in the first 3 events. Hopefully, we can build off a nice finish and get better for the next few tournaments.”

The Golden Griffins will travel to Lewisburg, Pennsylvania to compete in the Bucknell Invitational at Bucknell University which will run from Sunday to Tuesday.

Cross Country Men and Women Finish 33rd at Paul Short

Written by: Andrew Nowel

The Canisius Golden Griffins cross country team raced on Saturday at the Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Both the men and the women placed 33rd out of 43 for the men and 44 for the women. Though they had wanted to play higher, both teams raced very well in tough conditions as they outraced both the Brown Bears and the Rider Broncs in the women’s gold division 6k while the men outraced, in the gold division 8k, the Binghamton Bearcats and the host Lehigh Mountain Hawks.

The women’s team scored a total of 834 points which placed them 33rd at the meet. Leading the way for the women was Graduate Student Olivia Moran, running a 21:03.0 and placing 28th. The next Golden Griffin runner was Senior Jules Jones who placed 156th with a time of 22:10.7. Both Jones and Moran were happy with their times and with how the meet went, overall, for the Golden Griffins.

“I think the meet went well for the team,” said Jones after the race. “It definitely served as a confidence booster for us even though the conditions weren’t ideal. We really rolled with the punches Saturday morning with the slippery and muddy course. The women’s team did a great job of staying engaged during the race.”

Junior Kayla Schmidt finished 190th with a time of 22:27.1 while 5th Year Marissa Silba placed 261st with a time of 22:59.5. Rounding up the 5 runners for the Golden Griffins was Sophomore Jacqueline Appenheimer who placed 281st with a time of 23:10.0. Though the times of Schmidt, Silba, and Appenheimer weren’t what they wanted, the Golden Griffins, as a team, still benefited from their times and hard work as they helped the team to beat out the Broncs who they will see in the MAAC Championships in late October.

“I think we left the meet wanting more which will serve us well for the Canisius Classic and our MAAC meet coming up,” said Jones. “I can definitely see us making some big moves in these upcoming races.”

The men’s team scored a total of 897 points led by Graduate Student Tom Appenheimer who placed 30th with a time of 24:34.7. Senior Max Chew followed Appenheimer with a place of 195th and a time of 25:39.4. Sophomore Kyle Urban placed 239th with a time of 25:56.0 while Senior Ronan McDonald placed 270th with a time of 26:07.9. The 5 runners of the Golden Griffins were finished up by Graduate Student Andrew Perreault who placed 275th with a time of 26:09.9. The men’s team struggled to outrace multiple runners, but they still raced well and outraced the host school, the Mountain Hawks by 38 points.

The Golden Griffins will next race at a home meet where they will host the Canisius Alumni Classic on October 14th. The time is still to be announced.

Women’s Soccer Dominates Gaels on Senior Day

Written by: Andrew Nowel

It was an exciting day at Canisius University for the women’s soccer team as the Golden Griffins hosted the Iona Gaels. It was Senior Day, and 3 players were recognized. Seniors Jessica Jones and Sophie Chelini as well as Graduate Student Abby Molloy were all honored for their contributions to the team. The game was all Golden Griffins as they defeated the Gaels 3-0 behind a shutout from Jones as well as offensive production from 3 different Golden Griffins.

The Golden Griffins used the ceremony prior to the game as energy as they kicked off the game this morning. The Golden Griffins offense created a couple quality chances early on, but the Gaels shut them down. The Gaels also had chances, but Jones was there every time. 35 minutes into the game, the Golden Griffins found the back of the net as Freshman midfielder Nicki Silverman scored her 3rd goal of the season. Freshman forward Maggie Cregan was awarded the assist on Silverman’s goal which put the Golden Griffins up 1-0. They took that lead into the half, and everything was going the right way for the Golden Griffins.

The 2nd half was all Golden Griffins as the Gaels were held to 2 shot attempts in the entire half. The Golden Griffins would find the back of the net twice more as, at the 56th minute, Sophomore midfielder Skylar Cornell scored her 2nd goal of the season to give the Golden Griffins a 2-0 lead. Then, at the 75th minute, Junior forward Madeline Weltin scored her 2nd goal of the season to extend the lead to 3-0. Silverman and Junior midfielder Emma Oliphant were awarded assists on Cornell’s goal while Cregan was awarded a 2nd assist on Weltin’s goal.

The 3-0 victory was sweet for the Golden Griffins as multiple players, underclassmen and upperclassmen, were a big part in the victory. It was also a great way to honor the 3 Seniors that have contributed so much to the program. The team, as a whole, was ecstatic about the victory against a MAAC opponent to improve their MAAC record to 2-1-1 and overall record to 5-2-4. Jones

“I thought it was a great overall team performance,” said Jones after the game. “I was able to walk out with my family and celebrate my time at Canisius, and also honor my two amazing teammates, Abby and Sophie before the game which made it even more special. I’m really looking forward to seeing what this team can do as we get further into our season.

The Golden Griffins will travel to Fairfield, Connecticut to take on the Fairfield Stags on Saturday at 12 PM to continue their MAAC schedule.

Stats for the game

The Golden Griffins recorded 22 shots (13 on goal) while the Gaels recorded 7 shots (3 on goal).

Jones recorded 3 saves while the Gaels Freshman goalkeeper recorded 10 saves.

The Golden Griffins had 5 corners while the Gaels had 3 corners.

The Golden Griffins got called for 12 fouls while the Gaels got called for 10 fouls.

Volleyball Struggles in 3-0 Loss to Rival Purple Eagles

Written by: Andrew Nowel

The Canisius Golden Griffins returned to the court yesterday afternoon as they rematched the Niagara Purple Eagles in the Battle of the Bridge Part 2. After taking a loss that was hard to swallow the previous day, the Golden Griffins wanted to rebound in a big conference matchup. Even though they fought well, the Golden Griffins fell to the Purple Eagles 3-0.

All 3 sets weren’t pleasant for the Golden Griffins as the Purple Eagles came out and dominated them in mostly every way. The 1st set was a 25-11 victory for the Purple Eagles which summed up the rest of the match. The Purple Eagles took an early 7-2 lead in the 1st set and never looked back to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

With injuries still hurting the starting rotation, the Golden Griffins did have a couple small positives that came out of the loss, and it started in the 1st set. Sophomore setter Ella Bourque helped to set up many quality chances that Junior middle blocker Emma Mans and Freshman outside hitter Lauren Hubert finished off for kills.

The 2nd set had a great start for the Golden Griffins as Junior outside hitter Kara Zaucha earned 4 kills in the 5 points that were scored to start the set as the Golden Griffins took a 5-0 lead. However, the lead would hold for a very short time as the Purple Eagles wore down the Golden Griffins to take a 2-0 match lead. Even though the Golden Griffins fell 25-15 in the 2nd set, there were some positives. Freshman middle blocker Kalia Reisma was playing well, offensively, earning kills and blocks during both of the first 2 sets. Though it wasn’t much, the performance by Reisma was a bright spot in a rough match.

The 3rd set was another rough one for the Golden Griffins as they fell to the Purple Eagles 25-17. The Golden Griffins did make a final comeback in the final moments of the match, but it was stopped as the Purple Eagles were just too far ahead and won the match 3-0.

After the match, Head Coach Tom Hanna knew that the team had a rough match, but he also knew that they were young, and the errors, even though he accepts errors because it helps the team grow and learn, need to be fixed as they look forward into the season.

“Just a tough day at the office for us,” said Coach Hanna. “There is definitely growth [from the younger players], but on a day like today; it’s about outcome. You’ve got to do the job, and in the 1st set, we hit 7 balls into the net or off the court, so we just need to manage things a little bit better in those situations.”

The Golden Griffins will travel to Jersey City, New Jersey on Saturday to face off against their next MAAC opponent in the Saint Peter’s Peacocks at 1 PM.

Stats for the match

Golden Griffins- 29 points, 24 kills, 1 ace, 4 blocks, 23 assists, and 46 digs.

Purple Eagles- 58 points, 44 kills, 5 aces, 9 blocks, 39 assists, and 53 digs.

Volleyball Falls 3-1 to Rival Purple Eagles

Written by: Andrew Nowel

On a very warm day for the final day of September in Buffalo, the Canisius Golden Griffins volleyball team took the court against their rivals, the Niagara Purple Eagles. It wouldn’t be the match that the Golden Griffins wanted to play as the Purple Eagles defeated them in 4th sets by a score of 3-1.

The Golden Griffins got off to a strong start during the 1st set as they jumped out to a 9-5 lead. However, the Purple Eagles weren’t going down easily and brought the game to a 13-13 tie only minutes later. They would take a 15-13 lead, but a Purple Eagle would go down, with an apparent knee injury, forcing the Purple Eagles to take her out of the match. Coming out of the injury timeout, the Purple Eagles started to build momentum, but the Golden Griffins quickly tied the match at 17. The set went back-and-forth until the Purple Eagles scored their 25th point of the 1st set to win the set 25-23, taking a 1-0 lead in the match.

The Golden Griffins were playing, in the match, without 1 of their main offensive weapons. Freshman outside hitter Cameron Grange was out with an undisclosed injury. Not having her presence on the court hurt the offense and just the team in general as there were less subs as Freshman middle blocker Anna Lynch was also out with an undisclosed injury.

“It hurts,” said Junior libero Jillian Hanna after the match. “It’s not what we planned; it’s not what we practiced all week, so we just have to make adjustments. It’s part of the game. It’s finding what we can do to fix and move forward with the adjustments.

The 2nd set was similar to the 1st set where the Golden Griffins got out to a 7-4 lead, but the Purple Eagles came right back. More than halfway through the set, the score was tied 16-16, and the Golden Griffins were trying to take control of the set. Led by Freshman outside Lauren Hubert’s 10 kills, at the end of the 2nd set, the Golden Griffins nearly won, specifically, on a kill from Freshman middle blocker Kalia Reisma, but she was called for a net violation. Head Coach Tom Hanna wasn’t happy, to begin with, about a previous “non-call”, and he was given a yellow card for arguing the net violation call. The Purple Eagles would win the 2nd set 26-24, giving them a 2-0 lead in the match.

The 3rd set started with Coach Hanna being given a red card which gave the Purple Eagles a 1-0 lead in the set. The Golden Griffins were facing a loss if they lost another set, so, with the help of Sophomore middle blocker Bella Mosquera’s 5 blocks, at the end of the 3rd set, the Golden Griffins maintained a lead until Coach Hanna called his 1st timeout of the set with it tied at 15. The Golden Griffins came out of the timeout with renewed energy and took a 20-16 lead which led to the Purple Eagles calling their 2nd timeout of the set. The Golden Griffins would hold on to defeat the Purple Eagles 25-19 in the 3rd set, shortening the Purple Eagles match lead down to 2-1.

The Purple Eagles controlled the early part of the 4th set, forcing Coach Hanna to call his 1st timeout of the set. With a 10-6 deficit that the Golden Griffins needed to make up, they tried to complete the comeback, but the Purple Eagles just found every opening and opportunity to score as they took a 21-12 lead into the later stages of the 4th set. They would win the set 25-18, winning the match 3-1.

Hanna was pleased with how the team was dealing with everything that had gone on during the past week with the injuries, and how a young team is trying to work together to play their game.

“I think we’re a young team overall because we have 3 Freshman and a transfer playing, but they’re all doing a great job,” said Hanna. “I think it’s part of finding our way there, and when we’re on a high; we’re on a good high, so it’s just how we can finish and close out sets.”

The Golden Griffins dropped to 3-10 (1-4) on the season and return to the court tomorrow at 1 PM at Niagara University to rematch the Purple Eagles.

Stats for the match

Golden Griffins- 63 points, 49 kills, 3 aces, 11 blocks, 45 assists, and 80 digs.

Purple Eagles- 65 points, 44 kills, 3 aces, 18 blocks, 42 assists, and 79 digs.

Women’s Soccer Midseason Update: The Cause Behind This Year’s Success

Written by: Andrew Nowel

The Canisius Golden Griffins women’s soccer team has had an excellent season as they head into October with a 4-2-4 (1-1-1) record. Behind the exceptional goaltending of Junior Jordan Spencer and offensive production from the underclassmen, the Golden Griffins are ready to continue on their quest to play their best in the MAAC with the leadership from everyone on the team.

The Golden Griffins started the season with a very rough loss, but then went 8 games undefeated until their last game that they had played which was a loss against the Quinnipiac Bobcats last weekend. Head Coach Ryan Louis was really proud of how the girls were playing this season and wanted to see that continue as the season heads into October.

“Really proud of all of the fantastic young women, and even though we’re considered a young team, we’re not getting pushed around,” said Coach Louis on Friday. “We’ve been in pretty much every single game, and I think we’re we are right now is an exciting place.”

Every team needs a solid leader, and the Golden Griffins have that, but it isn’t just 1 person; it’s multiple people, and it’s upperclassmen and underclassmen.

“We have a pretty solid leadership group, and they’re all very different in their own way,” said Coach Louis. “Abby Molloy, who is a 5th year, is like the mother of the group; she takes care of everyone, and she has been here since pretty much Day 1 since I arrived. She really took on that ownership of turning the team around.”

Coach Louis didn’t just mention Molloy as the only leader as he mentioned Junior defender Sophia Konstantinou and Sophomore defender Meghan Heath as both critical parts of who the team is.

“Sophia Konstantinou has been a leader since Day 1, even her Freshman year, and she’s just an unbelievable human being,” said Coach Louis. “She’s one of the backbones to the culture of the program and why we’re so successful. Another leader is Meghan Heath. She is really gritty, really competitive, leads by example, wears her heart on her sleeve, and each of the leaders have gotten a hold on their class of what is expected. The camaraderie, friendship, and respect that they all have for each other, on and off the field, is really telling which I believe is why we are having the season we are having.”

The Golden Griffins are excited to keep playing well as they leave September behind and head into October with winning in the mindset. The Golden Griffins will host the Iona Gaels tomorrow at 9:30 AM and honor the 2 Seniors, Jessica Jones and Sophie Chelini, and Molloy for Senior Day.

Ice Hockey Season Preview: Golden Griffins Prepare to Defend Conference Title

Written by: Andrew Nowel

The Canisius Golden Griffins ice hockey team is getting ready to begin the 2023-2024 season with hopes of returning to the AHA Conference Championship game on March 23rd and defending their conference title. As we near the beginning of October and the Golden Griffins’ 1st game of the season on October 13th, they get ready to take the ice behind Head Coach Trevor Large and Senior captain Max Kouznetsov.

The season began as soon as the players returned or came to campus as the newbies got to establish who they are within the program.

“The 1st year in the program is making sure that guys are welcomed and valued,” said Coach Large earlier this afternoon. “We’re also trying to make sure that they’re doing well as they arrive at Canisius and become a part of the community and campus which hockey is a piece of that.”

The next step for the newbies is to have them learn what kind of culture that the program has been built on and to immerse them in that culture.

“Being around the team and starting to form those relationships [between older and younger guys] as well as relatively quickly get into the hockey piece where we will establish how we play and what that looks like,” said Coach Large. “Those are the main things we’ve done this season in terms of getting everyone prepared outside of the rink.”

With a new captain named a week ago, Kouznetsov, the team is strong on leadership as not just Kouznetsov is a leader; others step into leadership positions when they have to.

“Max Kouznetsov will be leaned on a lot because he has sharp leadership skills, a great personality, and he’s a good player,” said Coach Large. “There’s lots of guys that have been on their leadership path through the program, meaning he [Kouznetsov] will have a lot of help.”

The team also has been getting a lot of very positive attention from 3 of their graduates that are currently playing in the preseason of NHL teams. Cory Conacher, in his 13th professional season, is currently with the Carolina Hurricanes after graduating from Canisius College in 2010. Conacher has played 192 NHL games prior to this season and has played for 5 NHL teams over the 13 seasons.

Keaton Mastrodonato attended the training camp of the Dallas Stars. He graduated from Canisius College last year and was a big part of last year’s championship run for the Golden Griffins. Ryan Schmelzer has been the captain of the Utica Devils for the last 2 seasons and attended the New Jersey Devils training camp. He graduated from Canisius College in 2018. All 3 were great players and the attention is great for the program, Coach Large explained.

“We’re very proud of them,” said Coach Large. “I think what speaks to the program is that it continues to grow, and that we are developing really good hockey players.”

The Golden Griffins are almost at the beginning of the season as they start on the road at the Miami (OH) RedHawks on October 13th and 14th and will host their 1st home game on November 3rd against the Holy Cross Crusaders.

Men’s Soccer Tie Dolphins 2-2 to Finish Non-Conference Schedule

Written by: Andrew Nowel

The Canisius Golden Griffins men’s soccer team took the field yesterday afternoon as they faced off against the Le Moyne Dolphins in their final non-conference game of the season. The game was a close one as neither team dominated the other throughout the game. After 90 minutes of back-and-forth soccer, the Golden Griffins and Dolphins tied 2-2.

The game got off to a fast start from both teams as the Golden Griffins struck 1st with a goal from Sophomore midfielder Daniel Longo, scoring his 2nd of the season off of a penalty kick at the 8:20 mark of the game. However, the 1-goal lead didn’t last long as the Dolphins quickly created a scoring chance that would end up in the back of the net to tie the game at 1.

Only 12 minutes into the game, both teams had scored, and it seemed like the offenses would control the game. However, the defense from both teams started to play very well as neither team could get past the back lines. The Golden Griffins created a great chance in the 26th minute which led to a goal from Sophomore midfielder Michael Switala, scoring his 4th goal of the season. This goal had a brilliant setup from Junior forward Dylan Rice, awarded with the assist, who had an excellent game causing havoc to the Dolphins defense throughout the game.

The Golden Griffins couldn’t add to the 2-1 lead that they had built before halftime, and they went into the half with a lot of confidence. Head Coach Michael Tanke didn’t want to play defensively in the 2nd half and wanted to keep up the offensive pressure to try to put away the Dolphins.

The 2nd half started much slower than the 1st half as both teams couldn’t create the same chances that they were able to create in the 1st half. Halftime adjustments fixed that for both teams, but the Dolphins had more control of the game, early in the 2nd half. It took them a little while, but the Dolphins found the back of the net to tie the game at 2 with just under 25 minutes to play in the game.

As the game continued, the Golden Griffins started to play with urgency which helped them to create scoring chances. Behind their defense and Graduate Student Spencer Catalano, who made a couple great saves throughout the game, the Golden Griffins created some great scoring chances, but the Dolphins defense held strong to end the game in a 2-2 tie.

After the game, Rice and the team were pleased with the performance, but knew that they could have won the game if they had played the way they did in the 1st half for the full 90 minutes.

“Overall, we had moments of good play and periods where they couldn’t touch us because we were outplaying them, but we have to do that for 90 minutes in order to win games,” said Rice. “There were a lot of positives to takeaway from today's game. I think the major thing we’ve improved upon was our creativity in the final third, and this will definitely help us in MAAC play because, at the end of the day, goals win games.”

The Golden Griffins are on the road on Saturday as they head to New Rochelle, New York to face the Iona Gaels at 1 PM.

Stats for the game

The Dolphins recorded 16 shots (5 on goal) while the Golden Griffins recorded 12 shots (4 on goal).

Catalano recorded 3 saves while the Dolphins Freshman goalkeeper recorded 2 saves.

The Dolphins had 8 corners while the Golden Griffins had 3 corners.

The Dolphins got called for 12 fouls while the Golden Griffins got called for 9 fouls.

Women’s Soccer Shutout on Road against Bobcats

Written by: Andrew Nowel

The Canisius Golden Griffins women’s soccer team traveled to Hamden, Connecticut to face off against the Quinnipiac Bobcats this past Saturday and battled against a good MAAC opponent. After 90 minutes of a good fight, the Golden Griffins fell 2-0 to the Bobcats.

When a team doesn’t have a shot attempt during an entire 45 minutes, their opponent is absolutely dominating that team. The Golden Griffins were on their defensive side of the field for nearly all of that 45 minutes as they had no shot attempts during the 1st half. The Bobcats had 11 which only 1 went on goal and was turned aside by Junior goalkeeper Jordan Spencer. The Golden Griffins even had a corner, but no shot attempt was made as it was cleared by the Bobcat defense.

The 2nd half started once again with a couple of great scoring chances for the Bobcats, and it led to them beating Spencer to take a 1-0 lead. The game continued with the Bobcats still dominating possession, but the Golden Griffins were able to make 2 shot attempts with 1 coming from Sophomore midfielder Skylar Cornell. At the 81:07 mark of the game, the Bobcats found the back of the net to take a 2-0 lead and put away the game for a victory for the Bobcats. After 90 minutes, the Golden Griffins had 2 shot attempts with Spencer making 3 saves of 5 shots on goal.

It was a tough loss to swallow for the Golden Griffins as they were outplayed by the Bobcats in every way. Junior defender Sophia Konstantinou explained, after the game, that practice this week was going to be focused on preparing for the next game, not looking back at the previous loss.

“Despite the loss against Quinnipiac, we’ve started this week of practices with lots of focus, effort, and energy,” said Konstantinou. “The result of the game hasn’t dampened our spirits; it’s made us more resilient. Our upcoming home game is another opportunity to showcase our talent while honoring our incredible Seniors.”

The Golden Griffins drop to 4-2-4 (1-1-1) on the season and will return home to host the Iona Gaels for Senior Day on Saturday at 1 PM.

Stats for the game

The Bobcats recorded 21 shots (5 on goal) while the Golden Griffins recorded 2 shots (1 on goal).

Spencer recorded 3 saves while the Bobcats Seniors goalkeeper recorded 1 save.

The Bobcats had 2 corners while the Golden Griffins had 1 corner.

The Bobcats got called for 14 fouls while the Golden Griffins got called for 14 fouls.

Volleyball: Gaels Complete Comeback, Golden Griffins Look Forward

Written by: Andrew Nowel

The Canisius Golden Griffins volleyball team returned to the court this past Sunday after sweeping the Manhattan Jaspers 3-0 on Saturday. They took the court to face the Iona Gaels for the 1st time this season. The Gaels came into the match with a 6-8 record overall, 2-1 in the MAAC. After a long, exhausting match filled with neither team dominating the other, the Gaels defeated the Golden Griffins 3-2 after coming back from being down 2-0.

The match started as a back-and-forth battle as neither the Golden Griffins nor the Gaels could get any momentum going as the game was tied 10-10 early on. The Gaels started to pull away with a 16-11 lead, but the Golden Griffins would not back down as they came back, scoring 6 consecutive points to take a 17-16 lead before the Gaels called their 1st timeout. Out of the timeout, the Golden Griffins continued to build momentum and kept scoring points. Even though Head Coach Tom Hanna took a yellow card because the official wasn’t calling a certain rule that he wanted them to call, the Golden Griffins pressed on and won the 1st set 25-21.

Junior outside hitter Kara Zaucha was very helpful in the Golden Griffins 1st set win with 6 kills while Freshman outside hitter Cameron Grange totaled 4 aces which also was a big part of the comeback for the Golden Griffins.

The 2nd set started like the 1st set which was back-and-forth play. It wouldn’t be easy for either team to win the 2nd set, but the Gaels started to take control of the set as they took a 15-11 lead into the media timeout. However, the Golden Griffins didn’t take long to create a comeback led by Freshman outside hitter Lauren Hubert who totaled 8 kills as the Gaels took a timeout with the Golden Griffins leading 18-17. Zaucha also continued to dominate the outside, earning more kills as the set went on. As the set neared the end, with the score very close, the Golden Griffins pulled off the victory of the set by a score of 25-20, leading the match 2-0. Zaucha was pleased with how well the first 2 sets went, but knew that, in the 3rd set, they would need to keep the energy up and not sit back on the 2-0 lead.

“I think our energy was super good throughout the first 2 sets, and I think, in the 3rd set, it kind of started to plateau a little bit,” said Zaucha after the match. “In the 3rd set, you haven’t won anything yet, you’re up 2-0, but you haven’t won anything yet, and that’s when we need to really emphasize more energy rather than what we’ve been doing is enough.”

The Gaels got off to a great start in the 3rd set with a 8-5 lead, but the Golden Griffins wouldn’t let them run away with the set as the Golden Griffins made a comeback once again to take a 15-14 lead at the media timeout. The Gaels would hold on to win the 3rd set, 25-23 in another very close set.

With a 2-1 lead in the match, the Golden Griffins really wanted to win the 4th set to defeat the Gaels. Once again, neither team took control of the set as the first 10 points were split evenly to a 5-5 tie. The Golden Griffins tried to find their playmakers to help them take a lead, and after the score continued to be back-and-forth all the way to the media timeout, the Gaels led 15-13. The Gaels would not let up the lead at any point, and they won the 4th set to tie the match at 2.

As the match entered the 5th and final set, both teams were trying to find the final push of energy to push them to a victory. The Golden Griffins were trying not to blow a 2-0 lead completely while the Gaels tried to make a comeback to win the match.

The set started with the Gaels dominating every play. The Golden Griffins were struggling to do their game plan as the Gaels seemed to be finding any and every hole in the Golden Griffins defense. The Golden Griffins took a timeout after going down 4-1, but the Gaels continued to score points as time was running out for the Golden Griffins. The Gaels won the 5th set 15-10, winning the match 3-2.

Zaucha and the team were disappointed with the loss, but wanted to look at what areas they did well in as well as looking at what to improve on during practice this week.

“It adds fuel to our fire,” said Zaucha. “It definitely gives us a reason to put in a really good 4 days of practice; really lock in on the things that we can improve on today, but also take time to recognize that there were good things that happened on the court today. I think those are good things that if we carry into next weekend, we can be successful.”

The Golden Griffins, now with a 3-9 (1-3) record, will host the Niagara Purple Eagles in the Battle of the Bridge on Saturday at 12 PM.

Stats for the match

Golden Griffins- 83 points, 60 kills, 12 aces, 11 blocks, 59 assists, and 107 digs.

Gaels- 79 points, 61 kills, 4 aces, 14 blocks, 58 assists, and 109 digs.

Men’s Soccer Tie Bobcats 3-3 in Thrilling Game

Written by: Andrew Nowel

The Canisius Golden Griffins men’s soccer team has been struggling and haven’t been able to find their rhythm yet this season. After losing their 1st MAAC game last week, the Golden Griffins were ready to bounce back on their home turf against the Quinnipiac Bobcats. This was the Bobcats 1st conference game of the season, so the Golden Griffins could really use this to help them later in the season, but the Bobcats weren’t an easy foe to defeat as after 90 minutes, the Bobcats and Golden Griffins tied 3-3 after a very thrilling game.

The Bobcats got off to a running start as, only 9 minutes into the game, they found the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead. 10 minutes later, the Bobcats once again scored, making it a 2-0 lead in favor of the Bobcats.

Golden Griffins Head Coach Michael Tanke told his players to calm down and not to panic because there were still 70 minutes left in the game. 6 minutes after the 2nd Bobcat goal was scored, Golden Griffins Sophomore midfielder Tarek El-Zammar found the back of the net to shorten the Bobcats lead down to 2-1. The assists went to Sophomore midfielder Michael Switala and Freshman forward Mason Petrucci, and it was El-Zammar’s 1st goal of the season.

This would be the score heading into halftime, but the last 10 minutes of the 1st half weren’t going to not have some pushing and shoving as both a Bobcats player and Petrucci would get a yellow card for a little scuffle at the 35:46 mark of the half.

Coming out of halftime, the Golden Griffins built energy right away. This led to Junior midfielder Kodie Sarkodie scoring his 1st goal of the season to tie the game at 2. Petrucci got another assist on this goal, and the crowd was ecstatic to see their Golden Griffins tie the game after going down 2-0 early.

However, at the 55th minute of the game, the Bobcats struck back to take a 3-2 lead, but the Golden Griffins weren’t going to let them walk away with the win. The next 25 minutes of the game were intense as both teams tried to give their team an advantage. The Bobcats had multiple opportunities to put the game away, but either the shot attempts went wide or Junior goalkeeper Jack Petrie would make saves that kept the Golden Griffins in the game.

At the 80th minute, Sophomore midfielder Kyle Pollard found himself on a partial break after a great thru-ball was sent over to him by Freshman forward Matthew Fischer. Pollard shot and scored to tie the game at 3 with just under 10 minutes to play in the game. This was an exciting moment for Pollard, and he was happy that he could help his team in a big way.

“It was nice because I’ve had so many chances in the past, but especially in a big game like this,” said Pollard after the game. “We deserved it; everyone worked hard, and I’m glad I was the one to finish it off.”

The last 10 minutes was all Golden Griffins as they had 2 corners in the final minute which were turned away by the Bobcats defense, ending the game in a 3-3 tie. It was a good game for the Golden Griffins, and it was a step in the right direction for them. Pollard was pleased with the tie because the Bobcats were a good test of how they can turn their season around as they begin diving into the conference.

“We’re having trouble conceding goals and scoring the 1st one,” said Pollard. “It’s a good start to the season, [in conference play], after Manhattan because we tied the MAAC champions from last year.”

The Golden Griffins, now with a 1-6-2 (0-1-1) record, will host the Le Moyne Dolphins in their final non-conference game on Wednesday at 4 PM.

Stats for the game

The Bobcats recorded 16 shots (5 on goal) while the Golden Griffins recorded 8 shots (4 on goal).

Petrie recorded 2 saves while the Bobcats Sophomore goalkeeper recorded 1 save.

The Bobcats had 9 corners while the Golden Griffins had 4 corners.

The Bobcats got called for 10 fouls while the Golden Griffins got called for 14 fouls.

Volleyball Dominates Jaspers 3-0 to Win 1st Conference Match

Written by: Andrew Nowel

On a Saturday afternoon in late September, the Canisius Golden Griffins volleyball team returned home to host the Manhattan Jaspers after a very tough stretch of road matches. Already starting 0-2 in the MAAC, the Golden Griffins didn’t want to drop another conference match. After only 3 sets, the Golden Griffins took down the Jaspers 3-0 behind the offensive attack of Freshman outside hitter Lauren Hubert and the entire team’s communication throughout the match.

The 1st set was completely dominated by the Golden Griffins as they took a 1-0 lead in the match. Winning 25-15, the Golden Griffins were led by Hubert who had 4 kills and 1 block. After taking a 10-5 lead early in the set, the Golden Griffins pulled away, having a 12-point lead at one point. This was just the beginning of an excellent match.

The Jaspers came out in the 2nd set with a very different mindset and energy. This helped them jump out to a 9-6 lead early in the set. They were making less mistakes and creating more high scoring chances. However, the Golden Griffins weren’t going to go down easily, and they worked their way back to a 13-13 score through Hubert’s kills and some great blocking from Freshman middle blocker Kalia Reisma who had a total of 4 blocks halfway through the 2nd set. In the end, the Golden Griffins won the 2nd set by a score of 25-22, taking a 2-0 lead in the match.

With the lead now 2-0, the Golden Griffins attempted to put away the Jaspers. During the first 2 sets, Hubert earned 7 kills which helped the Golden Griffins in many situations. She was very pleased with how the Golden Griffins were playing and wanted to see them continue that as they tried to finish off the Jaspers.

“It’s definitely been a rough stretch, but, today, we really pulled through as a team, together, and worked hard to get this win,” said Hubert after the match.

The 3rd set was all Golden Griffins as the Jaspers couldn’t do anything. The Golden Griffins won 25-13, winning the match 3-0 which continued a 5-year streak, going back to 2018, where the Golden Griffins have defeated the Jaspers 3-0 in every single match since then. It was a great boost for a team that was struggling.

“Conference play is a big deal, and it’s the 3rd game of conference play [this season], so we really needed this win which we did,” said Hubert. “We did good; we all did our part, coming through and taking the win.”

Head Coach Tom Hanna was very pleased with the performance and was happy to see the team bounce back, doing the game plan that they have practiced from Day 1.

“It was a great performance; we did a great job with our serving, and just an overall great performance,” said Coach Hanna after the match. “We have to be a little bit cleaner [in preparation for tomorrow’s match]; they had 15 unearned points in the first 2 sets, so, tomorrow, they are going to have to earn the points.”

The Golden Griffins improve to 3-8 on the season, 1-2 in the MAAC, and will host the Iona Gaels tomorrow at 12 PM, and the game will be the 2023 Dig Pink Game for the Golden Griffins.

Stats for the match

Golden Griffins- 59 points, 41 kills, 9 aces, 9 blocks, 38 assists, and 55 digs.

Jaspers- 32 points, 23 kills, 3 aces, 6 blocks, 20 assists, and 44 digs.

Swimming and Diving Prep for 2023-2024 Season with 20 New Faces

Written by: Andrew Nowel

The Canisius Golden Griffins swimming and diving team is about to jump into their 2023-2024 season, and they have been working hard over the last couple of weeks to prepare. On October 13th, the Golden Griffins will face the Marist Red Foxes on the road to kick off their season. However, with that date fast approaching, the Golden Griffins aren’t done with practicing and getting ready for the season as they push on with their training.

Heading into the season, the Golden Griffins are a young team which creates unknowns, explained Head Coach Scott Vanderzell.

“We have a very young team, so a lot of unknowns right now, so we’re really looking to see just how  they race, and how they compete,” said Coach Vanderzell at practice Wednesday. “I’m really excited to get this season underway.”

The experience that the upperclassmen bring to every day of being part of the team is going to be very important to how the season goes with the team being as young as it is.

“The upperclassmen, Juniors, Seniors, and a couple 5th years, have experience that will help the Sophomores and Freshman, who are inexperienced, to become experienced and feel more confident in their races,” said Coach Vanderzell. “We’ve been beginning to improve in the MAAC each year, the last couple of years, so we want to continue that, and we hope that the underclassmen bond with the upperclassmen quickly, so that as they all start to walk away, they walk away with pride, growth, and the accomplishments of the team.”

Senior captain Jordan O’Connor is very excited to see what this year’s team can do as they have a lot of new faces on the team.

“This year we got over 20 new Freshman, so I think we have a great group of people coming in with a lot of new talent and potential, so I think that’s going to help us get that boost that we want,” said O’Connor at practice Wednesday.

The Golden Griffins are ready to kick off their season as they keep training as the October 13th meet keeps getting closer. With the new additions to the team, the Golden Griffins feel stronger than ever and look to build on successful seasons in previous years.

Men’s Soccer Struggles Again, Fall 4-0 on Road against Bonnies

Written by: Andrew Nowel

The Canisius Golden Griffins men’s soccer team was back on the field tonight as they took on the St. Bonaventure Bonnies on the road in Olean, New York. After struggling and losing 3 straight games and without scoring for 11 days, the Golden Griffins were hoping that this game was going to jumpstart their offense and the entire team going forward. However, the Bonnies offense had other plans as they defeated the Golden Griffins 4-0.

The 1st half started with the Bonnies having control of the possession and multiple chances that were stopped by Graduate Student goalkeeper Spencer Catalano. However, the Bonnies finally capitalized on the multitude of chances at the 36th minute to take a 1-0 lead in the game. The rest of the half went uneventful as the Bonnies took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Even though Catalano and the defense let in a goal during the 1st half, Senior defender Riley Wagner along with his fellow defenders did a good job of keeping the Bonnies from scoring more goals with the 12 shot attempts that they had.

The 2nd half started similarly to the 1st half as the Bonnies created scoring chances left and right. At the 51:43 mark of the game, the Bonnies found the back of the net once again to take a 2-0 lead. It wouldn’t end there as the Bonnies added 2 more goals before the game was over.

The Golden Griffins did much better to create chances themselves, but even though the Bonnies had less shots, they scored more goals than the 1st half. After 90 minutes of frustrating soccer for the Golden Griffins, they lost 4-0 to the Bonnies. Wagner and the team were disappointed, but knew that pointing fingers wasn’t going to solve any of their problems.

“It’s easy to look at the offense and point fingers,” said Wagner after the game. “Of course we want to score more and concede less, but there’s not just 1 solution that’ll fix everything we need to improve on. I believe it starts with us not losing focus and perfecting the way we play. I know there’s a lot more potential in the team that can be unlocked, and it starts with our mindset. We’re not changing the way we play; everyone knows that. Once we get that down, I think we can start getting some results our way.”

The Golden Griffins will return home and host the Quinnipiac Bobcats on Saturday at 1 PM in their 2nd MAAC game of the season.

Stats for the game

The Bonnies recorded 20 shots (7 on goal) while the Golden Griffins recorded 9 shots (5 on goal).

Catalano recorded 3 saves while the Bonnies Senior goalkeeper recorded 5 saves.

The Bonnies had 8 corners while the Golden Griffins had 3 corners.

The Bonnies got called for 5 fouls while the Golden Griffins got called for 8 fouls.

Cross Country Dominates Jasper Invitational, Men Place 2nd While Women Place 5th

The Canisius Golden Griffins cross country team had an excellent meet on Saturday as they raced in the Jasper Fall Invitational which took place in Montgomery, New York. Leading the way for the men’s team was Senior Tom Appenheimer who finished 1st in the men’s 8k by setting a course record of 24:33.6, helping to give the Golden Griffins men a 2nd place finish while the women’s team was led by Graduate Student Olivia Moran and Junior Kayla Schmidt who both recorded incredible PR’s to help the Golden Griffins women place 5th in the 6k.

The meet got off to a start at 10 AM this past Saturday with the women’s 6k. Both Moran and Schmidt got off to great starts and this helped them be able to pace themselves to end up where they did. Moran and Schmidt both hadn’t got a sub-22 in their collegiate careers, but as they both rounded the last turn, Moran and Schmidt realized that they were going to crush a sub-22. Moran crossed the finish line with an exceptional time of 21:08.8, beating her own time by more than a minute. Schmidt wasn’t far behind with a 21:40.1 which also beat her own time by more than 30 seconds. Both girls were extremely proud of their times and were also a little surprised of how well they truly did.

“I got out in a good position, around top 10, so right around where I finished,” said Schmidt after the race. “I was very happy with how I ran because I felt really confident during the race. I’ve never broken 22, so I was smiling down the home stretch and just so happy when I saw the time at 21 as I came down the home stretch.”

Moran ended up placing 5th while Schmidt placed 10th. Senior Jules Jones came in 22nd with a 22:13.0 and Sophomore Jacqueline Appenheimer came in 29th with a 22:33.4. Finishing off the meet for the women, 5th Year Marissa Silba came in 42nd with a 23:05.4. The Golden Griffins scored a total of 108 points, finishing in 5th place as a team and coming up just shy of both the Siena Bernards, who scored 106 points, and the Rider Broncs, who scored 105 points. It was very good for this to happen as it showed that the Golden Griffins could compete this season against some of the strong MAAC teams that they will see in the MAAC Championships later on in the season.

“Our big goal for the meet as a whole was to run as a team, that was our goal,” said Schmidt. “We wanted to show some of the conference what we could do. Coming from 6th and even 7th in the past at MAAC Championships, it’s huge for us to come in 5th amongst Quinnipiac, Rider, and Sienna and being so close to where we were to them, just emphasizes our hard work.”

The men’s team placed 2nd and had an excellent meet. Appenheimer finished 1st in the 8k with a time of 24:33.6, beating the Broncs racer by just under 2 seconds. Appenheimer after the race was very happy with his performance, but knew the work toward doing well at the MAAC Championships wasn’t done.

“I’m very happy with getting the win, but there’s a lot I need to improve before the conference championships,” said Appenheimer after the race. “I’m confident that if I continue to look at each performance with a critical lens, as well as putting trust in my coaches and teammates, then I’ll be ready when the time comes.”

Senior Ronan McDonald finished 7th with a 25:17.3 with Sophomore Kyle Urban not coming in too much behind McDonald at 13th with a 25:33.9. Senior Max Chew finished 15th with a 25:37.1 while Graduate Student Andrew Perreault finished 29th with a 26:05.2. The Golden Griffins totaled 65 points which was very impressive. Appenheimer and the team were really happy to race well on a very tough course.

“It’s a huge confidence booster for us,” said Appenheimer. “It is good to know that we are already in such great shape this early in the season, and that we’re only going to improve from here. As long as we continue to train diligently and recover after each session, we’ll be in a great place moving forward.”

The Golden Griffins will return to the cross country course on September 30th when they travel to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania where they will race in the Paul Short Invitational.

Volleyball Falls 3-0 to Bobcats, Lose 7th Straight

Written by: Andrew Nowel

A day after the Canisius Golden Griffins volleyball team lost to the Fairfield Stags, they were back on the court as they faced off against the Quinnipiac Bobcats on the road. The Golden Griffins struggled once again to play their game as the Bobcats won the match 3-0.

Just like the previous day, the Bobcats controlled the 1st set, winning 25-17, to open a 1-0 lead in the match. It’s always tough when playing back-to-back days, but Golden Griffins Head Coach Tom Hanna knew the team didn’t bring the energy he knew they had in them to start the match, telling the Golden Griffins to find that energy during the break between sets.

The Bobcats didn’t let up as they defeated the Golden Griffins 25-18 in the 2nd set, taking a 2-0 lead in the match. The Golden Griffins once again struggled to score on aces as they scored 0 points on aces throughout the match. This was not helpful because the Golden Griffins were not able to gain momentum that scoring aces brings to their team when they have scored on aces in the past.

The 3rd set still wasn’t how the Golden Griffins wanted to play, and the Bobcats defeated the Golden Griffins 25-18 to win the match, 3-0. The Golden Griffins were held to 3 blocks during the match which also didn't allow the Golden Griffins to score points. Freshman outside hitter Cameron Grange led the Golden Griffins with 10 kills, an area that they didn’t struggle in during the match.

After the match, Grange and the Golden Griffins weren’t happy with how the weekend went, but knew returning home will help them get back on track with practice and just being back home.

“Being back home in our gym will help us to reset for our upcoming games and give us an opportunity to grow and learn from our losses,” said Grange. “We’re coming in with a positive mindset and ready to bounce back!”

The Golden Griffins will host the Manhattan Jaspers on Saturday at 12 PM and then the Iona Gaels on Sunday at 12 PM.

Stats for the match

Golden Griffins- 37 points, 34 kills, 0 aces, 3 blocks, 32 assists, and 41 digs.

Bobcats- 50 points, 35 kills, 8 aces, 7 blocks, 30 assists, and 38 digs.

Men’s Soccer Struggles in 4-0 Loss to Jaspers

Written by: Andrew Nowel

The Canisius Golden Griffins men’s soccer team hasn’t been able to enter the win column a lot this season, and they were hoping to change that as they faced off against the Manhattan Jaspers on Saturday. However, the Jaspers had other plans and took a 4-0 victory to hand the Golden Griffins their 1st MAAC loss of the season.

It didn’t take long for the Jaspers to get off to a strong start as they scored at the 19:04 mark of the 1st half to take a 1-0 lead. That wouldn’t be the only goal in the 1st half as the Jaspers continued to create scoring chances which lead to 3 more goals being scored by the Jaspers before halftime.

At the 28:17 mark of the 1st half, the Jaspers took a 2-0 lead and then, 2 minutes later, the Jaspers took a 3-0 lead. At the 42:02 mark, the Jaspers found the back of the net again to take a 4-0 lead. It seemed like the Golden Griffins couldn’t do anything right as they were outshot 17-3 in the 1st half and just outplayed in every way during the half.

During halftime, Golden Griffins Head Coach Michael Tanke told his players to forget the 1st half and play their game in the 2nd half. The Golden Griffins did just that, and even though they weren't able to score, the Golden Griffins played a much better half. After 90 minutes, the Golden Griffins fell 4-0 to the Jaspers to begin conference play with a 0-1-0 record. The Golden Griffins also dropped to 1-5-1 on the season, but they knew that if they fixed their mistakes in practice, they would be able to rebound their season.

“It’s never easy going away from home and getting everything right on the football pitch,” said Graduate Student Inder Thind after the game. “We have a very young squad, and they have all got a taste of what MAAC play is like. We fixed up our mistakes at halftime and had many positives we can build upon. It’s just back to the training ground and correcting everything that went wrong. This is a time where the whole team needs to stick together and just focus on the games ahead. Our goals for the rest of the season don’t change.”

The Golden Griffins will travel to Olean, New York tomorrow to face the Saint Bonaventure Bonnies at 7 PM.

Stats for the game

The Jaspers recorded 25 shots (12 on goal) while the Golden Griffins recorded 6 shots (5 on goal).

Junior goalkeeper Jack Petrie recorded 8 saves while the Jaspers Senior goalkeeper recorded 5 saves.

The Jaspers had 8 corners while the Golden Griffins had 1 corner.

The Jaspers got called for 13 fouls while the Golden Griffins got called for 7 fouls.

Volleyball Falls 3-0 to Stags to Begin Weekend Road Trip

Written by: Andrew Nowel

The Canisius Golden Griffins volleyball team began MAAC yesterday as they faced the Fairfield Stags in Fairfield, Connecticut. Coming off a rough stretch of 5 consecutive losses, the Golden Griffins wanted to start MAAC play with a win to rebound their season from spiraling out of control. It wasn’t easy for the Stags, but they tired out the Golden Griffins and took home a 3-0 victory to hand the Golden Griffins their 1st loss in MAAC play.

The 1st set of the match was all Stags as the Golden Griffins couldn’t play the game plan they wanted to play. The Stags won the set 25-17, and the Golden Griffins had to try to adjust the game plan to be able to keep the 2nd set within their grasp.

That didn’t happen as the Golden Griffins also dropped the 2nd set, 25-9, to the Stags, and the Stags had everything going right for them. The Golden Griffins were struggling to get points on serves when they had them as only 3 aces were scored by the Golden Griffins throughout the entire match. This hurt the Golden Griffins because, prior to the match, serving was a very helpful part of their game plan.

The Golden Griffins entered the 3rd set with the mindset to win the set, and it showed. Anytime the Golden Griffins were down, they seemed to find a rhythm to be able to create a comeback. However, the Stags weren’t able to go to a 4th set, and they started to create the scoring chances they had created during the first 2 sets. The Stags won the 3rd set 25-23, ending the match with a 3-0 victory.

After a frustrating afternoon for the Golden Griffins, they weren’t pleased with the performance, but tried to look at the positives, so that they could better themselves for future matches such as the one they played the next day against the Quinnipiac Bobcats.

Stats for the match

Golden Griffins- 33 points, 27 kills, 3 aces, 3 blocks, 26 assists, and 36 digs.

Stags- 50 points, 37 kills, 6 aces, 7 blocks, 31 assists, and 41 digs.

Women’s Soccer Ties Jaspers 2-2 Behind 2 1st Collegiate Goals

Written by: Andrew Nowel

Early yesterday afternoon, the Canisius Golden Griffins women’s soccer team returned home to host the Manhattan Jaspers as their 1st conference home game of the season. After 90 minutes of excitement and 4 total goals being scored, the Golden Griffins and the Jaspers tied 2-2, but not without extra excitement from Golden Griffins Sophomore defender Meghan Heath and Freshman forward Elizabeth Cavanaugh as they both scored their 1st collegiate goal.

The Golden Griffins came out strong with a couple of chances that went wide right or wide left early on, but the Jaspers had a couple of high-scoring chances that were stopped by Golden Griffins Junior goalkeeper Jordan Spencer.

Fouls were being called more than usual throughout the game, but the Golden Griffins utilized this when Freshman midfielder Jessica Whitaker took a free kick that would end up in the back of the net. Heath, coming all the way from her center back position, scored the goal. It was her 1st collegiate goal, and she, along with her teammates, were ecstatic for her to score and for the team to now lead 1-0.

“It was unreal to score my 1st collegiate goal,” said Heath after the game. “I feel like, as a team, we run so many reps in practice on free kicks, it was just so rewarding for Jess and I to finally connect on one and get the perfect outcome.”

The lead wouldn’t hold for long as the Jaspers came back and scored 12 minutes later to tie the game at 1. However, the Golden Griffins weren’t done yet, and they were going to take the lead behind yet another 1st collegiate goal.

At the 41:03 mark of the 1st half, Cavanaugh found the back of the net with the assist going to Junior defender Sophia Konstantinou. Cavanaugh and her teammates were also ecstatic for Cavanaugh’s 1st collegiate goal as well as taking a 2-1 lead into halftime.

The 2nd half started like the 1st half with the Golden Griffins creating chances, but not being able to capitalize on them while the Jaspers continued to find shots that went on net, but were stopped by Spencer.

That was until the 64:10 mark of the game when the Jaspers were awarded a penalty kick which they capitalized on to tie the game at 2. This gave both teams a sense of urgency as they played the final 25 minutes. At the end of those minutes, however, no one had scored, ending the game in a 2-2 tie.

With the excitement of the goals worn off by the end of the game, and the result being a tie, the Golden Griffins weren’t upset to tie the Jaspers, but they knew that it could’ve been a win and that they will learn from their mistakes going forward.

“I think, as a team, we did a good job of maintaining energy, but it's still an area that we can improve on,” said Heath. “With that being said, I think we need to cut out the mistakes early, so we don’t have to constantly fight. Put teams away early and keep our lead throughout the game.”

The Golden Griffins move their record to 4-1-4 on the season and will travel to Quinnipiac University to take on the Quinnipiac Bobcats on Saturday at 12 PM.

Stats for the game

The Golden Griffins recorded 17 shots (5 on goal) while the Jaspers recorded 12 shots (10 on goal).

Spencer recorded 8 saves while the Jaspers Freshman goalkeeper recorded 3 saves.

The Golden Griffins had 10 corners while the Jaspers had 1 corner.

The Golden Griffins got called for 15 fouls while the Jaspers got called for 11 fouls.

Softball: How the Fall Season Leads to Success in Spring

Written by: Andrew Nowel

The Canisius Golden Griffins softball team is already working hard as they look ahead to the 2024 season this upcoming spring. Through team bonding exercises and dedication to hard work, the Golden Griffins already have the brief fall season coming up with the 2023 Alumni Game on Sunday fastly approaching and are ready for any challenge they will face this year.

The fall season is a great way for the coaches to get to know the new players on the team as well as give everyone an opportunity to start working toward a common goal of having the best season they can possibly have.

“The fall season for us as coaches is all about getting to know our 1st years and what they're capable of,” said Head Coach Kim Griffin. “It’s also a big opportunity for them to get to know the team and for the team to get to know them, not just on the field, but also off the field. When we’re on the field, we’re looking for where we think they fit, offensively and defensively; what are their strengths; what are the things that they’re going to bring right away as Freshman and what are the things that we need to develop in the offseason to get them ready to be a productive contributor to the team.”

There are a lot of fun things that the team does as bonding to get to know each other during the fall season. This is done by events organized around having the younger players sit down with the older players to have each learn something from each other to help build the culture of each year's team.

“I think the stuff we do off the field is as important as the stuff we do on the field,” said Coach Griffin. “One of the big things we do annually is a team retreat. The 1st week of school we call our Gritt Week, and we do early morning, hard workouts at Delaware Park, in the pool, or pushing sleds out on the turf, so we’re pushing them really hard, physically, that 1st week, and then we take the long weekend and go on a retreat. There’s a ton of team-building activities; we cook all of our meals together, and everyone is just immersed in the culture of the Canisius softball team.”

This season should be no different as the Golden Griffins continue their dominance in the MAAC conference. After hosting the MAAC Championship game the last couple of years, the Golden Griffins are ready to continue the tradition and pass it along to the younger members of the team in the coming seasons.

“The standard that the upperclassmen have set for themselves is we play in the championship game, we host the championship game, and we win the championship game,” said Coach Griffin. “That’s the culture that they have worked to create in their time here, so that level of experience and championship play is incredible; no one else in the conference has that.”

With the 2023 Fall season 2 days away from starting with the 2023 Alumni Game on Sunday at 11 AM, the Golden Griffins are ready to show the MAAC that they are the champions once again, and they are ready to show the entire NCAA what they are made of.

Women’s Soccer Finishes Non-Conference Play with 2-0 Victory

Written by: Andrew Nowel

The Canisius Golden Griffins women’s soccer team was on a roll, and they continued to dominate their opponents as they faced off against their final non-conference opponent of the 2023 season which was the Le Moyne Dolphins yesterday. Nothing seemed to be different as the Golden Griffins shutout the Dolphins 2-0 behind Junior goalkeeper Jordan Spencer’s outstanding performance, and Junior forward Madeline Weltin’s 1st goal of the season.

The 1st half was strongly favored by the Golden Griffins as they created scoring chances early on, but the Dolphins kept stopping the chances created by the Golden Griffins. After 30 minutes of not being able to find the back of the net, Weltin received a chance as she headed the ball into the net from a corner kick by Junior defender Erin Weir. This was Weltin’s 1st goal of the season, and it helped the Golden Griffins get out to a 1-0 lead.

After a 14-shot 1st half, the Golden Griffins were not about to slow down and came right out of halftime with a lot of energy. Only 22 seconds into the 2nd half, Golden Griffins Freshman midfielder Nicki Silverman found the back of the net with 2 assists being awarded to Sophomore midfielders Skylar Cornell and Lizzy Harkness.

With a 2-0 lead for the Golden Griffins intact, Spencer and the defense were able to slow the game down and create more chances on the offensive side. After a 27-shot performance from the Golden Griffins offense, with 15 of those shots going on goal, the Golden Griffins finished off a 2-0 victory over the Dolphins. Spencer made 3 saves with 5 shots not going on goal and started a new shutout streak that she hopes to take into conference play and continue.

The Golden Griffins will host the Manhattan Jaspers at 1 PM on Saturday as their 2nd conference game of the season.

Stats for the game

The Golden Griffins recorded 27 shots (15 on goal) while the Dolphins  recorded 8 shots (3 on goal).

Spencer recorded 3 saves while the Dolphins Redshirt Freshman goalkeeper recorded 13 saves.

The Golden Griffins had 5 corners while the Dolphins had 2 corners.

The Golden Griffins got called for 12 fouls while the Dolphins got called for 11 fouls.

Men’s Soccer Fall to Bearcats 2-0 as Offense is Shutdown Through 90 Minutes

Written by: Andrew Nowel

On a chilly Wednesday afternoon, the Canisius Golden Griffins men’s soccer team took the field against the Binghamton Bearcats with the mindset of a winning team. However, the Bearcats had other plans as they would finish the game with a 2-0 victory, holding the Golden Griffins to only 1 shot on goal throughout the entire game.

The 1st half was a back-and-forth battle between the Golden Griffins and the Bearcats as they both had a couple of scoring chances early on to give their teams a lead. Golden Griffins Graduate Student goalkeeper Spencer Catalano made the start in goal for the Golden Griffins, and he was stellar. During the 1st half, there were many high scoring chances from the Bearcats that were turned away by Catalano. The defense was sloppy for the Golden Griffins, but Catalano helped calm down his defense by making a couple great saves.

The offense for the Golden Griffins had a couple chances and made 4 attempted shots, but none were on goal in the 1st half. Sophomore midfielder Glodie Mata tried to create a couple of chances throughout the game, but the team struggled to be aggressive, he remarked after the game.

“I think the team’s performance wasn’t as good compared to the couple of games we’ve played so far this season in which we created so many scoring chances and were aggressive going forward to attack,” said Mata. “I feel like we lacked that this afternoon.”

This would hurt the Golden Griffins as the 2nd half began because the Bearcats took advantage of the hesitation that the Golden Griffins offense was showing. At the 64:53 mark of the game, the Bearcats were able to take a 1-0 lead and then add to that lead only 49 seconds later. The Golden Griffins lost any momentum they had, and the Bearcats were able to pull out a 2-0 victory.

After the game, Mata and the Golden Griffins were disappointed with how the game turned out because it wasn’t the level of play that they knew they could play at.

“Going forward, I think, as a team, we should remind ourselves of how good we can be and to follow the game plans and to keep trusting our way of playing because we all know our plans can work,” said Mata. “We saw it against Central Connecticut [State] where we were down 2 goals, but kept playing our way and trusted the game plan which led us to get a result that we wanted at the end of the day.”

The Golden Griffins will travel to Riverdale, New York to face off against the Manhattan Jaspers on Saturday to open MAAC play at 12 PM.

Stats for the game

The Bearcats recorded 22 shots (9 on goal) while the Golden Griffins recorded 6 shots (1 on goal).

Catalano recorded 7 saves while the Bearcats Graduate Student goalkeeper recorded 1 save.

The Bearcats had 13 corners while the Golden Griffins had 3 corners.

The Bearcats got called for 12 fouls while the Golden Griffins got called for 5 fouls.

Golf Finishes Off Cornell Fall Invitational with 9th Place Finish

Written by: Andrew Nowel

The Canisius Golden Griffins golf team began the Cornell Fall Invitational on Sunday which was being held in Watchung, New Jersey. This invitational was only a 36-hole invitational, and the Golden Griffins all played very well on the course. Scoring a team-low 293 and placing 9th was a step in the right direction for small and young golfers.

After Sunday’s part of the invitational, Round 1, was suspended due to darkness, the Golden Griffins finished Round 1 on Monday morning and then played Round 2 later that day. Junior Ryan Edholm led the way as he placed in the top 20, tied at 19th, for the 6th time in his career. Edholm scored a total of 146 through the 2 rounds which is his best 36-hole score this season.

Junior Ben Ramold shot a 147 over the 2 rounds and was tied with 6 other golfers for 21st. Ramold shot a 72 in Round 2 to propel him to the spot at 21. Both Juniors were very happy with the performance and knew for the team to score well, it was helping their own individual performances.

Freshman Mikey Takacs was able to play very well this past weekend as well as he scored a 73 in Round 2 which was his lowest score in his young collegiate career so far. Finishing with a total score of 150, Takacs was in a 6-way tie for 40th and was very pleased with the performance.

“I was satisfied with my performance last week,” said Takacs following the invitational. “It was nice to see my scores keep getting lower as the season goes on. I am figuring things out with my swing, so hopefully I continue to get better.”

The team’s performance also helped Takacs, Edholm, and Ramold feel good about how the season has gone only 3 invitationals in.

“I feel like the team’s low round of the year was really solid,” said Takacs. “A bunch of guys put up some respectable scores. I think the team has potential to go way lower than that, and hopefully we do later on this year. The low scores are definitely motivation and proof that we can compete with the bigger schools. It just comes down to putting up scores like that 2 or 3 rounds in a row. Both tournaments so far this year, we have had a bad round, collectively, as a team, and I think if we can eliminate that, we will have a lot of success.”

The Golden Griffins will now have a couple weeks off of playing tournaments until October 1st when they travel to Apalachin, New York for the Matthews Auto Collegiate Tournament.

Men’s Soccer Falls to Red Bears 4-2 after Comeback Falls Short

Written by: Andrew Nowel

On a chilly Saturday afternoon, the Canisius Golden Griffins men’s soccer team returned home to face the Cornell Red Bears. It was going to be a tough game for the Golden Griffins as the Red Bears entered the game coming off a win against a ranked opponent. Though the Golden Griffins battled and tried to comeback from a 4-goal deficit, the Red Bears held on to defeat the Golden Griffins 4-2.

The Golden Griffins got off to a slow start on Saturday afternoon and the Red Bears took advantage of it. Golden Griffins Junior goalkeeper Jack Petrie was able to hold off the Red Bears for the first 20 minutes of the game, but the Red Bears eventually found the back of the net. They would take a 2-0 and then 3-0 lead before halftime gave the Golden Griffins a break from the Red Bears offensive attack.

Coming out of the half, the Red Bears continued their offensive pressure on the Golden Griffins and this led to another goal from the Red Bears. With a 4-0 lead, the Red Bears sat back and relaxed their offensive pressure.

After 60 minutes of Red Bears dominance, the Golden Griffins were able to create a couple chances that led to Sophomore defender Josh Miller scoring his 1st goal of the season. 14 minutes later, the Golden Griffins shortened the Red Bears lead down to 4-2 behind Sophomore midfielder Michael Switala’s 3rd goal of the season.

After a tough loss, the Golden Griffins were disappointed they weren’t able to play a better game, but they were happy to take away different things that were done well that can be used as they move closer to conference play.

“I think that we played well as a team today,” said Miller after the game. “It’s never going to be easy playing a ranked opponent like Cornell, but I think we did a great job of staying in the game and competing until the end. Even though we lost in the end, we can learn from adversity experienced today going down 4 and bringing back 2 goals. Being able to handle adversity will help us pick up needed points during conference play.”

The Golden Griffins will host the Binghamton Bearcats at 4 PM on Wednesday.

Stats for the game

The Red Bears recorded 20 shots (9 on goal) while the Golden Griffins recorded 8 shots (5 on goal).

Petrie recorded 5 saves while the Red Bears Sophomore goalkeeper recorded 3 saves.

The Red Bears had 6 corners while the Golden Griffins had 4 corners.

The Red Bears got called for 15 fouls while the Golden Griffins got called for 12 fouls.

Women’s Soccer Earns 1st Win in Conference Play with 3-1 Victory over Peacocks

Written by: Andrew Nowel

The Canisius Golden Griffins women’s soccer returned to the field yesterday to match up against the St. Peter’s Peacocks on a Saturday afternoon matchup that would end favorably for the Golden Griffins. This was the 1st MAAC game that the Golden Griffins have played this season, and after a 3-1 victory over the Peacocks, the Golden Griffins began 1-0 in conference play while improving their overall record to 3-1-3.

It didn’t take long for the Golden Griffins to get started as at the 3:43 mark of the 1st half, Junior midfielder Emma Oliphant found the back of the net to give the Golden Griffins a 1-0 lead. It was Oliphant’s 2nd of the season, and it was unassisted.

Golden Griffin Junior goalkeeper Jordan Spencer entered the game with 5 consecutive shutouts which is an incredible feat. However, only 14 seconds after Oliphant gave the Golden Griffins the lead, the Peacocks answered right back to tie the game at 1. After 463:39 of shutout soccer for Spencer, the streak was broken, but she had to refocus as the game was now tied at 1.

The Golden Griffins wouldn’t take long to answer as around 10 minutes later, Oliphant found the back of the net for her 2nd goal of the game and 3rd of the season. After just under 14 minutes, the Golden Griffins led 2-1 in their 1st MAAC game of the season. The rest of the 1st half went uneventfully and with a 2-1 lead, the Golden Griffins were focused on holding the lead and even extending it if they could.

The Golden Griffins came out strong in the 2nd half, leading to another goal by the Golden Griffins at the 48:06 mark of the game. Sophomore forward Skylar Cornell found the back of the net to extend the Golden Griffins lead to 3-1. It was Cornell’s 1st goal of the season, and she was very excited to score the goal as her team finished off a 3-1 victory.

“Having my 1st goal of the season is always the best feeling, especially after the last few games I’ve had chances that are so close, and it’s great to finally put it in,” said Cornell after the game. “It was definitely something where going into the game we knew it had to be a win. We had a great mentality and even though a goal was let in early, we didn’t let up.”

With the Golden Griffins winning the game, they began conference play 1-0 and will finish their non-conference schedule on Wednesday when they travel to Syracuse, New York to face the Le Moyne Dolphins at 3 PM.

Stats for the game

The Golden Griffins recorded 21 shots (11 on goal) while the Peacocks recorded 7 shots (3 on goal).

Spencer recorded 2 saves while the Peacocks Junior goalkeeper recorded 8 saves.

The Golden Griffins had 5 corners while the Peacocks had 3 corners.

The Peacocks got called for 10 fouls while the Golden Griffins got called for 7 fouls.

Volleyball Falls 3-2 After Mastodons Comeback from 2-1

Written by: Andrew Nowel

On a Saturday afternoon, the Canisius Golden Griffins volleyball team returned to the court after a tough, but well-fought loss yesterday to the Kent State Golden Flashes. This afternoon, they faced off against the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons and again it was an amazing match that was filled with 5 sets of amazing volleyball from both the Mastodons and the Golden Griffins. In the end, the Mastodons closed out the match with a 3-2 victory over the Golden Griffins.

The 1st set, won by the Golden Griffins by a score of 25-20, was dominated by the Golden Griffins as they were able to win the outside with some great kills from Junior outside hitter Kara Zaucha and some great blocking from the Golden Griffins middle blockers. Freshman Kalia Reisma earned 2 blocks while Zaucha earned 2 as well.

The 2nd set was the opposite of the 1st set. The Mastodons came out strong, fueled by defensive plays that led to points for the Mastodons. The Golden Griffins made some mistakes in this set which also led to Mastodon points. The Mastodons won the set 25-20, evening the match at 1-1.

It wasn’t easy, but the Golden Griffins won the 3rd set by a score of 26-24. It was thrilling to watch this set since the Mastodons went up early, but the Golden Griffins never gave up and behind the blocking and a kill from Freshman middle blocker Anna Lynch, the Golden Griffins earned the set win to take a 2-1 lead in the match. This was Lynch’s 1st appearance for the Golden Griffins, and she was very excited and happy to be a part of the Golden Griffin volleyball family.

“It felt so great to be a contributor today, especially on a team with so much talent,” said Lynch after the match. “Our group is very supportive of each other which made my 1st experience on the court, as a Griff, notably positive.”

Down all set in the 4th set, the Golden Griffins nearly came back, but fell short by a score of 25-21. It was a tough set to swallow for the Golden Griffins because now with lost momentum, they were going into the tiebreaker set with the momentum in the Mastodons favor.

It was a thrilling 5th set to cap off a thrilling match. Back and forth they went with the score being 8-6 in favor of the Mastodons at the media timeout, and the teams switched sides. After the media timeout, the Mastodons took control of the set and the match. Though the Golden Griffins played an amazing match, the Mastodons took home the win by a 5th set score of 15-10 and a match score of 3-2.

The Golden Griffins weren’t happy with the result, but as Zaucha explained after the match, everyone contributed to today’s performance and there was a lot of good that came out of a tough loss.

“Despite losing a 5-set match, the team fought hard,” said Zaucha. “There were moments where a little more internal energy could have helped us, but I think we did a lot of good things today. For example, all 4 of our Freshman played crucial roles for us and put down some big points when we needed them to. The team being united and having each other’s backs makes me super excited to enter conference play because we will be a force to be reckoned with by keeping a sense of togetherness. It gives us something positive to carry into MAAC play.”

The Golden Griffins will travel to Fairfield, Connecticut to take on the Fairfield Stags next Saturday at 1 PM to begin their MAAC play.

Stats for the match

Golden Griffins- 78 points, 61 kills, 8 aces, 9 blocks, 55 assists, and 73 digs.

Mastodons- 83 points, 67 kills, 6 aces, 10 blocks, 62 assists, and 83 digs.

Volleyball Falls Just Short in 5-Set Loss to Golden Flashes

Written by: Andrew Nowel

The Canisius Golden Griffins volleyball team entered last night’s match against the Kent State Golden Flashes with hopes of defeating a very good team. The Golden Flashes had already played earlier in the day, but didn’t show signs of fatigue early on. On the verge of losing the match, in the 4th set, Sophomore setter Shannon Kehoe made 2 consecutive service aces that allowed the Golden Griffins to comeback to win the set, but they would eventually fall to the Golden Flashes in 5 sets, 3-2.

The 1st set of the match was different from how the Golden Griffins had played this season. They were ready to play, and the Golden Griffins fought to win the 1st set against a good Golden Flash team. Early in the 1st set, the Golden Flashes went up 7-4, but then the Golden Griffins answered with 6 consecutive points to take a 10-7 lead. Led by Junior outside hitter Kara Zaucha, the Golden Griffins took the 1st set by a score of 25-22.

The 2nd and 3rd sets were mostly Golden Flash dominant. Though the Golden Griffins had chances to keep it close, the Golden Flashes were able to find the weaknesses of the Golden Griffins which the Golden Griffins had been able to counter during the 1st set.  The 2nd set produced a small comeback near the end of it from the Golden Griffins, but it came up short. The Golden Flashes won 25-23 then 25-19 in those sets, taking a 2-1 lead in the match.

The 4th set seemed to be over before it started. The Golden Flashes came out strong, taking a 11–7 lead early and didn’t seem to be letting up. With a sub while the score was 15-11 in favor of the Golden Flashes, Kehoe entered the match to serve. She, then, served 2 consecutive aces that even though didn’t tie the match, they gave the Golden Griffins momentum to go on and win the set. Kehoe would re-enter the match to serve the final 2 points for the Golden Griffins, who won 25-23, evening the match at 2-2.

The NCAA rules for the 5th set are slightly different than a normal set with the major rule being that a team only has to score 15 instead of 25 to win the set. The Golden Flashes came out in the 5th set with no mercy and defeated the Golden Griffins 15-6.

Though it was a tough loss, the Golden Griffins worked hard to play very well against a very good Golden Flash team. The Golden Griffins will return to the court tomorrow at 12 PM at the KAC and will face the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons with a now 2-5 record.

Stats for the match

Golden Griffins- 68 total points, 48 kills, 11 aces, 9 blocks, 43 assists, and 72 digs.

Golden Flashes- 78 total points, 57 kills, 9 aces, 12 blocks, 54 assists, and 84 digs.

Women’s Soccer Offense Comes Alive, Defeats Bonnies 2-0 in Rivalry Game

Written by: Andrew Nowel

The Canisius Golden Griffins women’s soccer team took the field last night against non-conference rivals the St. Bonaventure Bonnies with hopes of winning a game on their home field. After 90 minutes of dominance coming from the Golden Griffins, a 2-0 victory would give the Golden Griffins their 1st home win of 2023.

The Golden Griffins started the game with a lot of energy. They came out with the mindset to test the Bonnies goalkeeper early. This allowed the Golden Griffins forwards to attempt shots and wear down the Bonnies goalkeeper.

The 1st half went by without a goal, but the Golden Griffins were easily the dominant team. It didn’t take long to find the back of the net coming out the half for the Golden Griffins. At the 49:46 mark of the game, Freshman midfielder Nicki Silverman scored her 1st collegiate goal to give the Golden Griffins a 1-0 lead, assisted by Junior midfielder Emma Oliphant.

The Golden Griffins didn’t ease off the gas pedal as they continued to put shots on the Bonnies goalkeeper which led to another chance by the Golden Griffins. At the 77:30 mark of the game, Oliphant found the back of the net for her 1st goal of the season. The assist for the goal went to Freshman forward Maggie Cregan.

The game would end in a 2-0 victory for the Golden Griffins as they earned their 2nd win of the season and the 1st at Demske Field this season. Oliphant and the Golden Griffins were very pleased with the performance as they outshot the Bonnies 28-3 with shots on goal being 11-2 in favor of the Golden Griffins.

“It was a huge win for our team, and everyone was so happy after the game,” said Oliphant after the game. “It was an important game to win to set us up in the right direction heading into our 1st MAAC game this weekend; now we have a lot of momentum going into [the] Saint Peter’s [game].”

The Golden Griffins will head back out on the road to begin MAAC play as they take on the Saint Peter’s Peacocks on Saturday at 12 PM with a now 2-1-3 record.

Stats for the game

The Golden Griffins recorded 28 shots (11 on goal) while the Bonnies recorded 3 shots (2 on goal).

Golden Griffins Junior goalkeeper Jordan Spencer recorded 2 saves while the Bonnies Junior goalkeeper recorded 9 saves.

The Golden Griffins had 4 corners while the Bonnies had 0 corners.

The Golden Griffins got called for 14 fouls while the Bonnies got called for 7 fouls.

Canisius Volleyball: The Season Preview

Written by: Andrew Nowel

The Canisius volleyball team began their 2023 season during the past 2 weeks by playing in 2 invitationals, both on the road. Going 2-1 at the Youngstown State Invitational and 0-3 at the Duquesne/Robert Morris Invitational, the Golden Griffins weren’t fully happy with the results, but knew that they had some great talent and the level of play was there if they could find the right style that they wanted to play.

Winning the tournament at Youngstown State was a great start for the Golden Griffins, and they were even happier with how they played, not just the result.

“I was fairly happy with the performance,” said Head Coach Tom Hanna. “Opening weekend is always dicey; you never know what someone will look like on the other side of the net. We came out of preseason with not as many things on my checklist checked off as we wanted to. That was a result of nickel and dime injuries of ‘Hey, this person can’t jump today’ or ‘This person can’t swing today’, so we just had to manage that. It limited how much we could install some things.”

The loss on the opening weekend came against the Youngstown State Penguins in the opening match of the season by a score of 3-2. The Golden Griffins bounced back behind Graduate Student Ella Louissa’s 18-kill match against the Saint Francis (PA) Red Flash and then a 10-kill match against the Belmont Bruins. The Golden Griffins won 3-1 against the Red Flash on August 25th after the loss earlier that day and then 3-0 against the Bruins the next morning. During the match against the Bruins, Louissa earned her 1000th kill of her collegiate career.

Feeling good about the 2-1 start to the season, the Golden Griffins traveled to Duquesne University for a doubleheader against the Duquesne Dukes on September 1st. Losing both of those matches was a wake-up call for the Golden Griffins as the Dukes defeated them 3-1 and then 3-2, but the Golden Griffins did improve between Match 1 and Match 2.

“The scores were ones we weren’t looking for, but I like how we handled ourselves in the 2nd Duquesne match because we struggled early in that 1st Duquesne match with blocking and following our assignments which we did better in the 2nd match,” said Coach Hanna.

The 3rd match of the tournament took place on September 2nd in the morning at Robert Morris University where the Golden Griffins struggled early and fell to the Robert Morris Colonials 3-1.

“The match started without us,” said Coach Hanna. “We didn’t have the sense of urgency that we needed; found it a little later, but it became a matter of too little too late.

With 1 more tournament that the Golden Griffins will host this upcoming weekend approaching fast before MAAC play will start, they look to finish the tournament part of their schedule strong and let that lead them into conference play.

“We’re gonna be in the deep end of the pool in terms of who we are competing against, but the question is, how can we do the things we want to do at a higher level,” said Coach Hanna. “We know that there are going to be moments where she is faster, stronger, bigger, and she’s going to hit an excellent shot, but how can we answer that is how we can compete, and we want to be the best sideout team in the league.”

With the season now getting closer to conference play, the Golden Griffins are ready to take the MAAC with no mercy and are ready to compete to be the best of the best.

The Golden Griffins host the Western New York Invitational this upcoming weekend where 2 other teams will compete in it. The Kent State Golden Flashes and the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons will play each other on Friday at 12 PM and then the Golden Flashes will take on the Golden Griffins at 6 PM. On Saturday, at 12 PM, the Golden Griffins will play the Mastodons.

Men’s Golf Places 10th at Red Bandanna Invitational

Written by: Andrew Nowel

The Canisius Golden Griffins men’s golf team began their season at the Little Three Championship back on August 29th where they finished 3rd out of the 3 teams that were competing. This past weekend, the Golden Griffins were back in action in Verona, New York at the Red Bandanna Invitational where after playing on one of the toughest courses they play on, the Golden Griffins finished 10th out of 15.

Because it was a 54-hole tournament, the Golden Griffins had to play 2 rounds on the same day which was played on Sunday, involving 36 holes in the 1st round. They shot a +38 as a team in Round 1 and kept consistency by doing a +19 in Round 2 and a +18 in Round 3, played on Monday.

With a +75 being the ending score for the Golden Griffins, they were frustrated that they didn't do better, but knew that the course at Verona was one of the toughest courses they play on every year.

Freshman Jake Dantonio led the Golden Griffins in the individual standings by tying 15th with a score of +8 by posting a 75-75-74 stat line for the tournament. The next Golden Griffin was Junior Ryan Edholm who placed 28th with a score of +12 with a 82-76-70 stat line. Edholm and the team were not disappointed with the results, however, as they played well on a very tough course.

“I think this was our overall best team finish at the tournament since the team has been going there; about 7 years,” said Edholm after the tournament. “Mentality wise, for me, I know I’m a good enough player to score well at that golf course, so I just need to keep it simple and not get frustrated.”

Edholm’s improvement from the 82 in Round 1 to the 70 was a great sign for him that the course doesn’t control his play; he controls how well he plays.

“I knew it was going to be a grind, and it wasn’t going to come easy there, and I think I did a really good job of staying present and just hitting the shot that is in front of me,” said Edholm. “I struggled big time in the 1st round shooting one of the highest scores I have ever shot in collegiate golf after really not hitting the ball that badly. It would’ve been really easy just to pack it in, but I grinded my way around for Round 2 to post a pretty good score on that course and then an even better score in Round 3.”

The Golden Griffins will travel to Watchung, New Jersey for the Cornell Fall Invitational next Sunday and Monday.

Men’s Soccer Scores 4 Unanswered to Defeat Blue Devils in Labor Day Matchup

Written by: Andrew Nowel

The Canisius Golden Griffins men’s soccer team finished up their roadtrip against the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils this afternoon, and it seemed like the game was in the hands of the Blue Devils until the Golden Griffins scored 4 unanswered goals to take the Labor Day victory by a score of 4-2.

The first 10 minutes of the game was all Blue Devils as they scored 2 goals in the first 7:40 of the game. With a 2-0 lead, the Blue Devils eased off with the offensive and tried to hold down the attack from the Golden Griffins. It would be successful until the 25:58 mark when Freshman midfielder AJ Zarcone scored his 1st collegiate goal to shorten the Blue Devils lead down to 1. The goal was assisted by Freshman defender Kevin Villacorta. This was a great momentum swing for the Golden Griffins, but they weren’t able to find the back of the net the rest of the 1st half.

After allowing 2 goals early in the game, Golden Griffins Junior goalkeeper Jack Petrie became a stone wall in net. During the entire 2nd half, 6 shots were attempted toward Petrie’s goal, but none of them went into the net.

The Golden Griffins continued the offensive pressure well into the 2nd half and this allowed them to tie the game at the 75:44 mark. Assisted by Sophomore midfielder Glodie Mata, Sophomore midfielder Michael Switala scored his 1st collegiate goal which sparked the Golden Griffins offense to come alive.

At the 82:40 mark of the game, the Golden Griffins took the lead 3-2 with Sophomore midfielder Daniel Longo’s 2nd goal of the season, assisted by Freshman midfielder Alberto Reyes. Just a minute later, Switala found the back of the net again to give the Golden Griffins a 4-2 lead with just over 6 minutes left to play in the game. The goal was assisted by Junior forward Ely Sidibe. Switala and the Golden Griffins were very happy to get these goals as it pushed them over the hump to earn their 1st win of the season.

“It felt great to help the team out in such a way,” said Switala after the game. “Having scored these goals pushed our team over the deficit and get our 1st win of the season. I’d say there’s no better feeling than that. The next step is to focus on getting a result this weekend.”

Switala and the Golden Griffins felt synced after the tying goal was scored to be able to score 2 more goals before the end of the game.

“Everything felt like it went into place once that tying goal went in,” said Switala. “Most of, if not our whole team, had the same consensus that we could go get another [goal] and win this game.”

The Golden Griffins will return home, with a now 1-2-1 record, to host the Cornell Red Bears on Saturday at 1 PM.

Stats for the game

The Golden Griffins recorded 16 shots (10 on goal) while the Blue Devils recorded 12 shots (5 on goal).

Petrie recorded 3 saves while the Blue Devils Sophomore goalkeeper recorded 6 saves.

The Golden Griffins had 4 corners while the Blue Devils had 2 corners.

The Golden Griffins got called for 11 fouls while the Blue Devils got called for 5 fouls.

Canisius Cross Country Wins the Little Three Championship Once Again Behind Moran’s PR

Written by: Andrew Nowel

Entering the 2023 Cross Country season, the Canisius Golden Griffins were confident that they would start out strong at the Little Three Championship, facing off against local schools in Niagara University and St. Bonaventure University. The highlight of the meet would come when the women’s 5K was run where Grad Student Olivia Moran accomplished a PR with a time of 17:51.0, leading the way to victory for the Golden Griffins.

The late afternoon started out with the men’s 5K where Grad Student Tom Appenheimer would finish 3rd with a time of 15:09.2 earning the Golden Griffins 3 points, but in cross country, the higher the points; the less chance to win the meet.

Though Appenheimer didn’t finish 1st or 2nd, his teammates would take the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th spot, meaning it would be very hard to win the meet for the Niagara Purple Eagles and the St. Bonaventure Bonnies. Leading the charge in 5th place was Senior Ronan McDonald with a time of 15:33.4. After the meet McDonald was very pleased with the team’s overall performance.

“It felt great to get back out there again and test the fitness after a long summer grind,” said McDonald. “We’ve all been itching to get back out there, and it was good to see everyone running strong and getting the win as a team. We feel like we’ve got something special brewing this season, and we can’t wait for the rest of the season.”

The Golden Griffins men’s team finished with 29 points, beating the Bonnies by 12 and the Purple Eagles by 42.

The Golden Griffins dominated the women’s 5K by placing in the first 4 spots earning a victory with ease. Led by Moran, Sophomore Jacqueline Appenheimer and Junior Kayla Schmidt finished 2nd and 3rd with times respectively of 18:45.2 and 18:54.2. Senior Jules Jones came in 4th with a time of 18:59.4. Moran and the entire team were very pleased to earn a 18-point meet and want to continue that as the season continues.

“I’m proud of how the team did,” said Moran. “This is probably the strongest the team has looked my whole time at Canisius. It’s still early, but we have big goals for the end of the season.”

For Moran, she PR’d by 59 seconds which was a big accomplishment, and she knows that the team will have a great season with all the returning runners and the new runners that joined the team this season.

“I was super happy with my race. I went out hard and was a little lonely out front,” said Moran.

The next meet will be on September 16th in Montgomery, New York at the Jasper Fall XC Invitational. The Golden Griffins will face the Manhattan Jaspers at 10 AM on that day.

Men’s Soccer Ties Skyhawks 2-2 after 25-shot 2nd Half

Written by: Andrew Nowel

On a beautiful Friday afternoon in Easton, Massachusetts, the Canisius Golden Griffins men’s soccer team took the field on the road at Stonehill College. The 4 PM start for the Golden Griffins during the week was odd, but that didn’t stop them from nearly defeating the Stonehill Skyhawks on the 1st day in September. Though the Golden Griffins had the lead in the final 10 minutes of the game, the Skyhawks found the back of the net to end the game in a 2-2 tie after 25 shots were totaled by both teams in a wild 2nd half.

The Skyhawks got off to a good start, scoring at the 15:58 mark of the 1st half. However, Golden Griffins Junior goalkeeper Jack Petrie and the defense were able to hold off the Skyhawks for the next 15 minutes and were able to create a scoring chance on the opposite side of the field. Freshman forward Mason Petrucci was able to find the back of the net at the 32:58 mark, exactly 17 minutes after the Skyhawks had scored. It was Petrucci’s 1st goal of the season and his 1st collegiate goal.

“The feeling of scoring my 1st collegiate goal is something I’ve always thought of,” said Petrucci after the game. “I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity and that my hard work is starting to show.”

Now with a tie game at 1, the Golden Griffins continued to be aggressive on offense which allowed many chances coming out of halftime. At the 54:57 mark of the game, the Golden Griffins once again lit up the scoreboard as Junior forward Ely Sidibe found the back of the net for his 2nd goal of the season. With a 2-1 lead, the Golden Griffins felt confident as they continued the aggressiveness of their play.

The 2nd half became a shootout of shots. The Golden Griffins would attempt 9 more shots before the end of the game while the Skyhawks would attempt 11 more shots with a goal being scored late in the 2nd half by the Skyhawks at the 81:50 mark of the game.

The Golden Griffins would have a couple more chances with the game now tied at 2, but the biggest chance came when the Skyhawks shot the ball as time expired at Petrie who made the final save of the game to keep the score 2-2.

After a strong performance from the Golden Griffins in their 3rd game of the season, Petrucci and the offense were happy with the 2 goals that they scored, but knew that they could do even better as they move forward.

“The tie is a step in the right direction, but it’s still not what we were looking for,” said Petrucci. “As we move into our MAAC games, we look to continue to grow and be better as a team.”

The Golden Griffins will travel to New Britain, Connecticut to face off against the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils on Monday afternoon at 1 PM.

Stats for the game

The Skyhawks recorded 19 shots (10 on goal) while the Golden Griffins recorded 13 shots (4 on goal).

Petrie recorded 8 saves while Skyhawks Freshman goalkeeper recorded 2 saves.

The Skyhawks had 5 corners while the Golden Griffins had 1 corner.

The Skyhawks got called for 10 fouls while the Golden Griffins got called for 5 fouls.

Women’s Soccer Plays to Scoreless Tie against Bulls

Written by: Andrew Nowel

On the final day of August, the Golden Griffins women’s soccer team returned home to Demske Field to host the Buffalo Bulls. Through a gruesome 90 minutes of back-and-forth battle, the Golden Griffins and the Bulls tied 0-0 with both teams having very good scoring chances throughout the 90 minutes.

The Golden Griffins came out strong in the 1st half with a couple of chances in the first 5 minutes of the game, but none were shot on goal. However, most of the 1st half was controlled by the Bulls as they seemed to dance around the Golden Griffin defense, but Golden Griffin Junior goalkeeper Jordan Spencer was right there to make some incredible saves once again.

Spencer came into the game with around 280 minutes of shutout soccer on her resume, and she wasn’t about to let the cross-town team break her streak. After making a couple incredible saves, with a little help from the crossbar, Spencer and the Golden Griffins held strong and kept the game at a 0-0 tie.

After 45 minutes, the game remained 0-0, and once again the Golden Griffins used the 15-minute break to start off strong in the 2nd half. This time, instead of allowing the Bulls to control the pace and play of the game, the Golden Griffins would create scoring chances on transitions which created a couple very high scoring chances.

Right on the 51st minute, Junior forward Madeline Weltin made a great run and found the ball at her feet with no one except the goalkeeper to beat, but she just missed the net to the right, keeping the game at 0-0. The final 15 minutes of the game were intense for both teams. Both teams created multiple high scoring chances that were saved by both goalkeepers or they missed the net. One final attempt was made by the Bulls that went wide right of the net, giving the Golden Griffins their 3rd tie of the season.

Spencer was the player of the game last night as she made 5 saves and all of them were quality saves. The Golden Griffins moved their record to 1-1-3 with the tie while the Bulls, coming off a Power 5 win against the Ohio State Buckeyes, moved their record to 2-1-1.

Though the Golden Griffins didn’t score last night, they played well against a very good team. The Bulls are the favorites to win the MAC this season, and the Golden Griffins were not going to let their cross-town opponent walk all over them. The Golden Griffin offense created some very good chances with Weltin, Junior midfielder Emma Oliphant, and Freshman midfielder Jessica Whitaker all contributing in quality attempted shots in the 2nd half. With their next game 6 days away, the Golden Griffins won’t just be ready to play for when the St. Bonaventure Bonnies come walking onto Demske Field next Wednesday at 6 PM, they will be ready to win.

Stats for the game

The Bulls recorded 14 shots (5 on goal) while the Golden Griffins recorded 5 shots (1 on goal).

Spencer recorded 5 saves while the Bulls Senior goalkeeper recorded 1 save.

The Bulls had 8 corners while the Golden Griffins had 0 corners.

The Golden Griffins got called for 11 fouls while the Bulls got called for 10 fouls.

Men’s Soccer Season Preview: How the Golden Griffins will Rebound from 2 Losses

Written by: Andrew Nowel

With every season comes challenges for any team. The Canisius Golden Griffins men’s soccer team is no different. With already 2 losses on their hands, the Golden Griffins can’t afford to fall much further behind the .500 mark. Behind Head Coach Michael Tanke, the Golden Griffins shouldn’t be counted out just yet.

The Golden Griffins started the season last Thursday on the road against the St. Francis (PA) Red Flash. It was a close game, but the Red Flash pulled out a 2-1 victory over the Golden Griffins. Returning home to open their home schedule against the Cleveland State Vikings was the next game this past Monday. Again, the shootout of a game went in favor of the Vikings in a 4-3 victory. Though the Golden Griffins and Coach Tanke had lost the first 2 games of the season, there was no need to panic.

“I think both games in terms of the run of play and how the games have looked are where we want to be,” said Coach Tanke after Monday’s loss. “We’re playing in a way that we’re executing what we want to do, but in both games, we have conceded goals on transition moments where we lose the ball. The good news is that if we stop opponents from scoring we are probably in pretty good shape.”

Even though the Golden Griffins have been outscored 6-4 by their first 2 opponents, they’re scoring goals offensively which should lead to some critical wins down the road.

As the Golden Griffins look forward into the rest of the season, Coach Tanke will not be changing his game plan.

“How we’re going to attack the rest of the season is the exact same way that we’ve been doing since not only August 7th of this year, but since August 7th of last year,” said Coach Tanke. “We’re not a program that is going to be reactionary with these kinds of things. We have principles and ideas on how we want to play the game, and the scoreline isn’t going to change that.”

Leadership is always a good quality for a successful team, and the Golden Griffins have great leadership from their 5th year Senior all the way down to the Freshman who are learning how to be good leaders from Day 1.

“In terms of leadership, I think we have plenty of leaders, but in terms of age and experience, we’re probably a little bit thinner,” said Coach Tanke. “Even the Sophomores are leaders, a lot of those Sophomores have played over 1000 minutes of DI soccer, so if you’ve played 1000 minutes of DI soccer, I think age has no restrictions at that point.”

The great thing about having strong leadership in a team is that the accountability for each players’ actions on and off the field are always a priority.

“One of many advantages of having an identity of play, having principles in what we’re trying to do; a clear vision of how we want to play, is now everyone can hold each other accountable,” said Coach Tanke. “There’s no lack of understanding is to where we’re trying to go and how we’re trying to play.”

The Freshman are also able to learn how to take care of themselves on and off the field by seeing how the older guys carry themselves in different situations.

“The environment that we create is going to be what they then replicate for the next 4 years,” said Coach Tanke. “That’s for better and for worse because I think if we create a good environment, I think we’re moving in the right direction for a long time to come, and if we don’t create a good environment, it’s really hard to then reverse that, so it’s very important that they learn everything from the older guys.”

Coach Tanke and the Golden Griffins will continue to work hard to be a successful team this season. Already seeing the dreamy potential of the team only in his 2nd season, Coach Tanke feels confident that they can be a successful team this year and for years to come.

Women’s Soccer Earns 1st Win of Season Behind Whitaker’s Clutch Goal Off Corner

Written by: Andrew Nowel

It was another beautiful day in Youngstown, Ohio this past Sunday as the Canisius Golden Griffins women’s soccer team took the field against the Youngstown State Penguins in hopes of scoring their 1st goal and winning their 1st game. Behind Freshman midfield Jessica Whitaker, the Golden Griffins scored their 1st goal and won their 1st game 1-0.

Once again the defense for the Golden Griffins had to be sharp as early chances by the Penguins challenged Junior goalkeeper Jordan Spencer and her defense to be on top of their game. It took only 30 seconds for the Penguins to set up a shot that Spencer knocked away without a second thought.

Once again the offense found its roots in Junior midfield Emma Oliphant as she took the first 2 shots of the game for the Golden Griffins at the 5-minute mark and then at the 8-minute mark. The Golden Griffins seemed to control the mentality of the 1st half as the offense was creating scoring chances and the defense was locking down any opportunity that the Penguins had.

The Golden Griffins continued this in the 2nd half as Oliphant found herself open for her 3rd shot attempt of the day which was stopped by the Penguins goalkeeper. A dangerous moment came at the 66th minute when a corner for the Penguins nearly went into the net, but Spencer made an excellent save to keep it a scoreless game.

Finally, the Golden Griffins received their 2nd corner of the game and they capitalized. With the assists going to Sophomores Lizzy Harkness and Skylar Cornell, Whitaker scored her 1st collegiate goal from the corner as a loose ball that found the back of the net.

The urgency in the Penguins’ play after the goal was scored was very evident. The only attempted shot by the Penguins, at the 86th minute, missed the net, and the clock ran out, giving the Golden Griffins their 1st win of the season.

With another 90 minutes of shutout soccer for Spencer, she felt good as the team won, and she continued her dominance in goal.

“I feel incredibly grateful to my back line as the credit for the 3 consecutive shutouts belongs to my whole team and not just me,” said Spencer after the win. “I couldn’t do it without them! Jess scoring felt like a long time coming, and I think she finally broke through the barrier which will allow us to continue scoring more goals for the rest of the season and hopefully lead us into MAACs!”

The next game for the Golden Griffins will be hosting the Buffalo Bulls on Thursday at 6 PM.

Written by: Andrew Nowel

With the Canisius Golden Griffins women’s soccer team starting their season without scoring a goal in their first 2 games, the Golden Griffins came into Thursday night’s matchup against the Detroit Mercy Titans with a certain goal in mind: to score a goal. After a couple well-placed shots from Sophomore midfield Skylar Cornell and Junior midfield Emma Oliphant that couldn’t find the back of the net, the Golden Griffins held strong on the defensive side led by Junior goalkeeper Jordan Spencer who made a couple of spectacular saves in the 2nd half, ending the game in a 0-0 tie for the 2nd straight game.

The Golden Griffins took the field against the Titans with a positive mindset and some new faces in the stands. The Class of 2027, officially, began their path to becoming leaders in todays world by having orientation kick off, ending their 1st day of orientation with the 7 PM women’s soccer game.

The Golden Griffins entered the game with a 0-1-1 record after falling to the Colgate Raiders 4-0 and tying the Binghamton Bearcats 0-0. The Golden Griffins came out strong, controlling possession while creating high scoring chances through Cornell and Oliphant. 45 minutes of the 1st half would result in a scoreless effort from both teams with both goalkeepers making good saves to keep the score at 0.

The Titans rebounded with an offensive surge at the beginning of the 2nd half, but the Golden Griffins held strong led by Sophomore center back Meghan Heath. During this surge, the Titans put multiple high scoring chances that Spencer made some spectacular saves on.

Behind Spencer’s perfect outing in goal and the defense locking down the Titans’ attack, the Griffins defended perfectly, but could not score. The final 10 minutes of the game returned in favor of the Griffins as they held possession with a couple strong scoring opportunities that went uncapitalized.

As the final seconds of the game came to a close, the Golden Griffins fell to 0-1-2 on the season with the defense being the highlight of Thursday night’s game. The Golden Griffins will travel to Youngstown State on Sunday to face off against the Penguins with the game kicking off at 1 PM.
